[request] Need a VTOL to rescue Jeb

Recommended Posts

Jeb is stuck in the mountains and the charge on his suit is running out (TAC life support) Mission control estimates he only has around 30 minutes to live.

However, he is stuck in a very perilous depression in the mountains 50 km from KSC. The altitude is too high for one heli rotor, and the terrain is too bumpy and steep and short for a traditional aircraft to land and pick him up.

My attempts at a rescue craft have all failed. I apparently need help :P

Can you design a ship to rescue him?

I've crashed about 20 of my own ships over there, so there's plenty of fully stocked pods of snacks and beer for Jeb to live on for a while. It's really hard to land anything on those slopes. As soon as you touch down, it rotates your craft downhill, pointing your engine against the slope and immediately giving you a bunch of lateral speed, resulting in a crash. However, if you cut your engine as soon as the uphill gear hits the ground, then your downhill gear falls 2 meters and slams into the ground, resulting in a crash. I just can't land here.

I admit, I didn't read the manual for your Ox, but I did alright. I just don't know what all the fancy docking ports are for.

Oh dear, umm, the module underneath is meant to get you into orbit, you're not really meant to land with it! :P If you detach the module (called the jet Mule) by pressing the abort key and fly with both the jet and rocket engines going you should be able to do a precision touch down. Anyway, the Stratos should do the job just don't forget to use the rockets and the jets on landing. The little open top Herbie's got the biggest landing footprint so will be a good bet if you're still having trouble... Good luck!

Awesome! Jeb is back at KSC! the Stratos had just the right amount of fuel and kept the life support systems and the lights running for the entire mission (which stretched into the night)

What a perfect craft for the mission. Thanks Cupcake!

This is landed at KSC
