Maybe they began as cells and started growing just like fungus does. But perhaps they survived asteroids and such, Leading them to what they are now. I just noticed that kerbin has all one mass so maybe kerbin is in its early stages. And maybe the giant meteorite impact on kerbin wiped away other life. But now kerbin is in kerbals hands now. Knowing that they keep the air filled with carbon dioxide. This probably explains why there are just a few kerbals left. Probably they got wiped out and only some survived. And this was happening while kerbin was still forming.

Kerbin right now almost resembles when all the land mass of earth was together.
