Landing gear deployed state

Recommended Posts

I've been searching the forums for awhile after clues regarding the part config parameters that control the deployed state of the stock landing gear. it seems the information was here at one time but every link I find is a dead end. one even claimed to be a complete list of part parameters but it was too good to be true. does anyone know this information or where I can find it? what is the parameter for changing the deployed state of the stock landing gear?

Okay, I found an answer. In case others are interested I will post it here. The trail started with the Winter Owl's videos on space shuttle construction. eventually I found a thread about his videos and all was made clear. the wheels are resized versions of the stock landing gear from the Taverio's Pizza and Aerospace mod. The Winter Owl mentions the config tweek that makes them start retracted in this discussion.

basically you add the starting state parameter to the landing gear module of the resized gear and all of them start retracted. according to the winter owl this doesn't work on the stock wheels.

MODULE
{
name = ModuleLandingGear
startingState = RETRACTED
}

EDIT: If you're interested in this stay tuned. because the above "solution" isn't working so far. 'doh!

I suppose you could look at the files for ladders, which start retracted, and apply the same lines to the landing gear.

But just out of curiosity, what's so important about having gear that starts retracted that you need to tweak files and/or add duplicate parts to your toybox? Can't you just hit G to retract the gear right after the ship spawns?

The only time I've wanted gear to start retracted was when I built an airplane in the SPH, copied it over to the VAB, stood it on end, and then built a rocket under it to launch it vertically. But I quickly discovered that taking off with the gear extended was better than having them retracted. The lift from the wing on the front of the rocket has a very strong tendency to pull it over so having the drag of the extended wheels pulling on the other side tended to balance that out.

I checked ladders and many other things for clues like that with no success. I did end up finding the wheels I needed at Winter Owls Orbital Wings Launch System thread.

I wanted to have my shuttle landing gear start retracted as the space between it and its large fuel tank is very tight. as far as compensating for lift and center of mass at the launch the Tiberdyne torque compensation plugin does the job there. plus you can add the torque compensation module to any engine you like.

Well, if having the gear extended in the VAB won't let you put the tank on the bottom of the shuttle, hit Alt-F12 and turn on part clipping. That will let you connect the tank to whatever holds it to the shuttle even if the landing gear protrude into the tank. Then you can just retract the gear on the Launchpad manually without having to muck about with editing files or adding parts.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
