[Challenge] Piloting a SRB munshot

Recommended Posts

This challenge was inspired by the latest NASA mission to the moon

2 SRB stages and a liquid fuelled probe that will eventually crash into the mun sorry moon

So having fiddled with a design made out of stock parts..

The challenge here is how good a pilot are you? and Can you land safely on the mun?

Not sure of what you are looking for. but I have this from another challenge back in may

Mun Mission.

Total Cost 3285.

The Second stage Has slightly too much TWR

This Stage finalizes LKO and begins Munar Transfer, Landing engine has to finish that though.

On course to Mun, readying a small correction to put me on an impact trajectory. (TBH there were a couple of mishaps where I forgot to rotate to face the sun before warping and probes impacted or were ejected due to running out of leccy)

coming in for a landing near the south pole

Final descent.

nearly there, careful... Careful... Really wish I had some kind of laser altimeter.

Touchdown.

I think the challenge is to do it with the craft provided, otherwise its way too easy.

And challenging indeed, not much fuel to work with. Did a first run, but already used to much fuel before the last quicksave so gonna try again in a couple of minutes. I did get the probe head to survive, speed on impact was about 30m/s, also tried with rcs assist, but not enough power there.

Well, the thing is, i really know the transfer from Kerbin to the Mun from hundreds of launches. So re-doing that every single time takes away the fun for me, and i still play to have a good time :)

So what i do is, i go to Kerbin orbit (takes a couple of launches to get it right with an unfamiliar craft), plan and execute a capture maneuver, fastforward a bit, and do a quicksave before i start my final mun maneuvers.

And it can still take a lot of time that way, because if you save at the wrong point its not possible anymore, like what happened in my first trials. Also, even with quicksaves, it took me a couple of hours to complete, and thats about the right time for a challenge imo, so well done :)

But if its really necessary I can do a full youtube run :P (http://www.youtube.com/machinemarkoez)
