When do the original three respawn?

I accidentally killed Jeb, and this time I didn't simply revert to launch.

Apparently the original three astronauts respawn? Does anybody know what triggers this? Is it a certain amount of time? A certain number of launches?

EDIT: Did a little bit of research, and it appears that kerbonaut respawn is enabled by default in the persistence file. Do the original three have any special respawn characteristics? Does respawn enabling only effect them, or all kerbals? Conversely, does disabling respawn prevent any kerbals from respawning except for the original three?

That's a good question. It's highly possible that I killed the three before astronaut complex was implemented, so now I wonder where they are - they don't appear in either of "available", "assigned" or "lost in action" lists. I need someone like Jeb to go for Eve return mission.

If you don't turn off respawns, all of the dudes will respawn. When you turn off respawns, death is permanent for everyone including the original 3.

Is there way to respawn them right away? There's a mission only they are up to.

I've killed Jeb and he never ever returned. I've even tried to blast literally hundreds of Kerbals but he never respawned. I've even tried editing that cfg file.

That's why I'm starting fresh when 0.22 comes out.

You can edit the persistence file and change his value to 1. Then he'll be available.
