Horror games: Suggestions?

I had always thought horror games were stupid. C'mon, it's just a video game, right? Then, I stayed over at a friends house. He got me to play the prologue in Nightmare House 2. Needless to say, there were swear words. :D

What I'm asking is if you have any recommendations on what horror games I should try out. Of course, KSP, Minecraft and Civ 5 will remain my darlings, but I would like to expand a little.

Also, if you had a funny jumpscare moment or anything, don't be scared to share it as well. :)

You definitely want to try out Amnesia. The Dark Descent is at a ridiculous price on Steam and the new one who came out last week, A Machine for Pigs, is also there, pretty cheap too. Played both and they are both great. The Dark Descent is a bit more dark, is slightly more scary, and has more puzzle elements. However, A Machine for Pigs has a much, much, better story. It depends on what you're the most into.

But really, both are great. Just grab one, you'll want to play the other one after going through one of them.

Aye, and for a scary moment, I was playing A Machine for Pigs this weekend and someone called me on Skype ;_____; smashed my knee on my desk while choking on my coke and nearly dropping it on the floor.

I couldn't recommend Amnesia: Descent of Darkness enough. Not a game I have played, or you could pay me to play, but I am having a lot of fun watching Gopher play it on youtube (he was the first person I found who actually got into the game, is legitimately being scared by it, and by extension, his audience gets to feel a lot of the same tension and atmosphere).

From personal experience, I suppose the Deadspace games fall into that category, though I think the feer might lose something when you can always back into a corner and panic fire until everything dies (the fully upgraded pulse rifle in the second game is amazing for this, and I have totally had moments with various guns where I just started shooting blindly until the bad things were vaporized).

I've seen slender as well (EatMyDiction), a more casual one, but definitely tense (like Amnesia, you can't really defend yourself, just try to run).

I'd say Amnesia, for a complete horror experience. DeadSpace is a good one as well. If you're into Jumpscares, Slender games can be fun, but they get old fast and eventually you'll be immune to those jumpscares.

Also. Kraven Manor is an EXCELLENT one. So is Outlast.
