VAB problems again: no connecting joints where they should be.

Recommended Posts

So this is what I was making (base for duna ^^)

0v5dvog.jpg

It is some kind of habitation module.

I did copy-paste thingy,BUT this is what I got

eVE3fRH.jpg

and again

If you don't get a problem, here it is:

I want to make second module like the one I did copy.BUT it doesn't connect when it should do.

Anyone have design ideas to fix this?

Copying doesn't work that way at. Those sub-assemblies only have a single connection node... the one, it was connected to the primary part in the vessels part tree. Yes, thats can be very annoying sometimes... but i am not aware of any workaround beside considering that when building your rockets.

The stock game does not let you do this because of the way the relationship of parent/child parts work. You would need to attach one docking port to the other first and then radially attach the hab module to it, but this can't be done...

However, this mod lets you do that by letting you choose any part to be the root part:

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/43208-0-21-1-Jul29-SelectRoot-Let-another-part-be-root-Fixed-Action-Groups

Just build your hab module as you did before, select the docking port as the root, save it as a subassembly and try to connect it then.

*note* Doing this can cause mechjeb/kerbal engineer to report mass incorrectly and start giving wrong dV values, but that may be just my crazy designs...

Then what you want to do is impossible because the hitchhiker module is not surface-attachable. You can try rotating the hitchhiker pod so the docking port is on the top node (but that wouldn't make much sense). Or edit it's part.cfg to make it surface attachable (open the part.cfg and change "attachRules = 1,0,1,1,0" to "attachRules = 1,1,1,1,0") but that would be considered modding the game... :/ You would need to build the side modules part by part, starting from the docking port of course. Copy-paste still won't work.

*edit* Wait, that won't work... :/ You would need to edit the docking port as well because you can't radially attach things to it... And it will probably cause them to connect in a weird way. :(

First, are these modules going to be launched separately and you are testing the layout or it will launch as one and you are using the docking ports to get the surface attachment?

If they are launching separately, you'll have to build a temporary rover thing under each piece, then 'launch' them and assemble the base out next to the launch pad.

If you are using docking ports for surface attachement, look at the Structural Mount (forget the name) in the structures section. I'm pretty sure it is cross-feed enabled so kerbals can move between the pods. (Would require testing before launching.)

For a stock installation, those are the two things that come to mind.

Hello, you may be able to do it this way :

KdvvalSl.png

i used those decouplers / structural pylons and I-beams to make a 'construction assembly' to align the side modules docking ports to the core module docking ports, so they will automatically magnetize after the craft is loaded ingame :

note : - i used the debug menu to hack gravity to test it - establishing this kind of connection works better once in orbit, than under gravity :) - also, the struts between the modules will disappear once the construction parts is ejected - so you will have to be extra careful when trying to land this kind of thing - docking ports alone does not make a great connection - or to eject the construction parts only after you landed at your destination if you want to keep the struts to strengthen the whole during the landing.
