razark
I'm going to work in a bit so they can tell me to go home. The last email we had yesterday said that our company might allow us to use our vacation time to cover hours.
lajoswinkler
Can someone clarify this? What does it mean to shut down a government? It sound absurd. Someone has to run the country.
Monkeh
Literally couldn't believe my ears when I heard this on the radio on the way to work this morning.Desperate for someone to explain to me why this is all happening. It's utterly ridiculous from what I can gather."We can't agree on this subject so that's it...EVERYONE GO HOME!"Halp pls?
Lohan2008
Shut down of US government (public service) will effect national parks like Ellis Island (Statue of Liberty), libraries, museums.the main worry is that shutdown could roll on to include hospitals, unemployment agencies, etc, etc. Edited October 1, 2013 by Lohan2008
Capt_Reynolds
Shut down of US government will effect national parks like Ellis Island (Statue of Liberty), libraries, museums.the main worry is that shutdown could roll on to include hospitals, unemployment agencies, etc, etc.Go look at Google's daily doodle. It's very ironic given the current state of the national parks.
razark
It affects a lot more than national parks. Government agencies are running with only "essential personnel", with everyone else sent home. No business is to be conducted, except for work that ensures safety and health of people.http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2013/09/politics/government-shutdown-impact/index.html?hpt=hp_t1It's like two spoiled children, fighting over a toy. Each one realizes that he can't have it to himself, so to keep anyone else from playing with the toy, they burn the place to the ground.
lajoswinkler
Before this threads gets closed, would someone please explain what does this mean? Surely Monkeh's explanation can't be right.
Guest
This is not the first time that there has been a U.S government shutdown. It is simply a way for the minority party to express their displeasure with the current administration, similar to a filibuster. It really means nothing in the end. The IRS, FBI, Homeland Security, and the rest of the alphabet soup will go on just like before. This is really aimed at the American people, who despite what the media reports, do not like being told what they can or cannot do.
kahlzun
this probably explains it best:http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/09/30/absolutely-everything-you-need-to-know-about-how-the-government-shutdown-will-work/
lajoswinkler
Yeah, we've seen how the American people do not like being told what they can or cannot do. You're basically being made government's bit*hes for the last decade and a half. Things you were imagining in dystopian novels and things you were sure "could never happen because people would rise against it" are now your reality. So is this a kind of mini polite coup d'état being done by an angry part of the government?
