T-Class Heavy Lander

T-Class Heavy Lander

I have included the T-Class Heavy Lander with launch stage to allow new players to put this lander into orbit of Kerbin.

Design Goals:

The "T-Class Heavy Lander" has been primarily built to allow landing/return to orbit from Tylo when full of fuel.

The secondary goal for the rest of the planets/moons have been to allow easy IVA landings and huge margins of error for piloting when it comes to fuel and a moderate pod SAS speed all of which should improve piloting skill.

The third goal is to allow a minor slowdown in the atmosphere when landing to allow fuel to burn off improving the TWR(Thrust to weight ratio).

Planets/moons able to land/return to orbit from:

All Jool's moons

Eeelo

Dres

Duna, Ike

All Kerbins moons

Eve's moon Gilly

Moho

Specs: T-Class Heavy Lander

107.735 tons

6,878 DV with all engines fireing

103 parts

2 Kerbals

2 cupola command pods

2 drogue parachutes (able to decouple)

1 standard shielded docking port (able to decouple)

4 landing legs

Action groups:

1. All engines but nukes - toggle

2. Only nukes - toggle

3. Solar Panels - toggle

4. Ladders - toggle

Gear. Landing legs - toggle

Lights. Landing lights - toggle

Abort. All engines and parachutes - on

Flight tips:

Tylo:

If going to land/return from Tylo make sure all fuel and stages are attached.

Ditching the parachutes is advised.

Slowing down horizontal velocity at PE of 10,000-15,000m is recommended.

Make sure you stay above 4,600m until your slow enough around 400-500m/s

Watching fuel is necessary.

Watching altimeter is necessary.

To return to orbit the two tanks with the LV-909 engines must be near full.

Everything else:

Stages are set up to work well in vacuum if entering atmosphere fuel flow from the small fuel tanks will drain faster with all engines on.

file description available in VAB.

Have fun try landing from the bottom cupola pod while in cockpit(IVA view)

I know this is way off topic but there is another challenge that deserves some some attention. It is not my challenge and I don't know the guy but WOW! What he did is amazing, and I think he is not getting the attention he deserves for it. I know this thread gets a lot of views, heck I am entered in this challenge too, so I thought I would share a link here.

I hope you don't mind Xeldrak. I was just too good for it to go unnoticed.

Straight from the lab of Genius Evil, his most Evil Geniusness, comes a revolutionary new luxury lander.

Behold!

MENDELEV 3!

8YNFF1C.png

Most contemporary lander designs are "Efficient" "Low part count" or "Minimalist". Space pickup trucks, if you will

The discerning customer wants something... Different. That's where MENDELEV 3 comes in. A work of genius, evil genius that is, the MENDELEV 3 is a

"Space luxury coupe", the Mercedes-Benz, the BMW, the Lexus of the lander world. MENDELEV 3 has features.

HIGH DELTA-V: The MENDELEV 3 is theoretically capable of landing on Duna and returning to orbit. Munar landings can be done with no risk of fuel shortages.

HANDS FREE PILOTING: An automated control module means you can sit back in your leather-upholstered acceleration couch inside the habitation module and enjoy the landing.

LANDING LEGS: The MENDELEV 3's NO-SHOK landing legs can hit the ground at speeds in excess of 15m/s without damage. And they look great. (DISCLAIMER: NOT MY INVENTION)

STYLING: The MENDELEV 3 features futuristic 3x symmetry. Three protective panels are also jettisoned after landing. Still trying to justify that one.

U-LOAD ATTACHMENT SYSTEM: Three jr. docking ports are featured for attaching the payload of your choice. (payloads not included)

TWO-STAGE DESIGN: Shows that you can afford to leave parts behind.

Don't wait! Get yours today!

It should be fixed now. Please send a feedback!

Got it thanks :) Was a bit worried about the RCS placement over the ladder for a second but testing reveals Kerbals are better at climbing ladders than I thought :)

Non-talking about my UFO?

Definitely the prettiest so far, but now Jeb's trapped in there! Not entirely sure how he got in there in the first place :)

Its carry 3 men, and tested, going in and out no problem and with ladder. If you test it. Don't forget to press the self-destruct button. :)

(entries with a delta-v value marked * have multiple engine types toggle-able within the same stage and hence DV values may change drastically in use)

Note that these are by no means the only or most important values to consider. One may wish to consider aesthetics, ease of fixing to launch vehicles, RCS placement, utility value, ease of build replication, and not least the Challenge guidelines linked by Xeldrak. There are numerous factors involved; one may value the aesthetics in the UFO, the utility in the Mulefly One, the beautiful insanity in the Ultra Heavy Colony Class, the destination variety available with the T-Class Heavy (or, ahem, the gentlemanly charm and elegant simplicity of the Gonzalez Light Heavyweight).

Treat the above table merely as a jumping off point to further investigation.

My UFO got toggle-able engines. Key 1, Key 2, and Key 10 for Ladder, and Key Abort for self-destruction.

Indeed. I didn't add an asterisk to yours to denote substantially variable DV for a couple of reasons:

  1. Difference in delta-v between running the 390 vacuum ISP clipped aerospike engine and the four 350 ISP rockomax engines is likely to be fairly slim, unlike the nuke v. LV909 differences seen in some other designs.
  2. Individual engines have specified fuel tanks - eg. the aerospike can't take from the radial tanks (while the radials can take from the central tank this will only ever result in lower than listed DV due to rockomaxes lower ISP at all atmospheres). Without manually transferring fuel between tanks (something not really possible with the level of clipping) the aerospike has a fixed ~622 dv available to it. This is different to some of the designs marked where the same fuel can be burnt at either 200 ISP, 390 ISP or 800 ISP which will have very significant effects on delta-v.

If I am still in time, them I would like to change my entry to the Heavy Multi-role Lander

More delta V, more thrust, more crew, still no gallery.

Oooh, that's quite clever. Particularly like that you've considered how it's going to fix onto transport/launch vehicle by providing a strutted de-couple-able mount point to the otherwise hard to reach centre point. Have updated my table above with your new entry (table entry reflects part count & mass with afore mentioned mount point decoupled, ie. how it would present when preparing to land).
