John Hurt is... Which Doctor, exactly?

I've heard two things about John Hurt as the Doctor: One is that he's the incarnation between the 8th and 9th Doctors, and the other is that he's the LAST Doctor. Which is true?

As I understand it, neither explanation has been officially endorsed, they're just people's pet theories. We may find out more during the Christmas special this year.

Somewhere along the line, I was led to believe that he was an older version of the 9th doctor.

50th anniversary should be good though.

I'm really exited to find out how he fits into the story. The most simple explanation would be that he is the doctor in between the movie and the resurrection fo the series. The doctor that ended the time war by commiting genocide. It would explain why Rose is comming back. She dealt with the 10'th doctors clone who did the same.

but I'm sure Moffat won't go for the simple route.

He`s the doctor that won the time war. He is the regeneration that acted `not in the name of the doctor` so is also sort of not the doctor. He may be after or before the current set of doctors, time is wibbly like that.

Let`s face it, if we are going to see the end of the time war then it should be high budget, well written and have john hurt as the doctor.

He might even be an alternative doctor from another timeline.

Yeah, I agree, from what's been told it sounds like he's the doctor that ended the time war. The doctor has tried to suppress memories of him, like he's traumatized and guilty about what he did. But we do know he has those feelings about ending the time war.
