Just had a really interesting idea....

Recommended Posts

This should be re-tested.

Around 0.19 people figured out how to make a roller bearing for an all-stock helicopter by using landing gear wheels against the surface of a tank.

I was never able to make mine fly, but the concept was there- the rotor could spin and put on speed. Just every time I tried it the rotor became unbalanced and wrecked the whole apparatus.

I'll explain my thinking here a little bit. When .22 hits, I'm probably gonna whip together another "An Exercise in Absurdity", using what I've learned since that program. As a refresher, here's one of those old ones:

This next one will be asymmetrical. It will have my custom landing gear. It will be going places.

And as far as the wheels goes? I had an interesting idea. Imagine loading fuel tanks into a girder structure with a docking port in the end. Like a cartridge, or cassette. Build a corresponding socket on the ship, use an RCS tug to grab the fuel cartridge and load it into the socket. The wheels would function to guide the cartridge in the right way so it loads, and would make a really interesting way of ejecting the cartridges.

Probably would be less functional than I'm imagining it, but darn it! I want to build one!

From what I've seen, (from having rovers held inside the body of a craft), the tyres are effected by the craft. I've had tyres break because they've where too close to the sides of the container they where in rather than clip thou it. Is that what you where asking?

The exception to that is when the tyre is held on a robotics hinge in which case everything from the hinge onwards will clip thou the craft. I exploited that in a folding rover design, but that was with the old DamnedRobotics, I've not retested that with the latest InfernalRobotics.

*snip*(Imagine danny and whackjob together :sticktongue:)

It would be the end of kerbal-kind!! I've often wondered what Danny and Whackjob's "lost" tabs look like!

Edit

Ah, now I see what your idea is I think that might work if the wheels are just acting as passive rollers. If you're thinking of using the wheels to actively pull or push the tank into place I think that might have problems because of how the game handles how wheels turn. I think some would turn in one direction but those on the other side might act against them. Not sure, will be interested in your results!

I anticipate that problem and already have a solution figured out. :)

However, It would only work once you decoupled the rotor from the rest of the craft. As long as it was one single craft, the wheels would just clip through.
