Eve ascending

Recommended Posts

Take a small science-equipped probe on-site. A barometer, gravity meter and acceleration meter are sufficient to calculate air pressure and resistance, so you can check where the atmosphere ends. I'm just not sure what their detection threshold is, especially on the barometer, so that might get a little annoying.

Also, you can use the bar on top of your screen. It might be that it only starts descending a small while under the atmospheres upper limit, but you can still use the bars and relative size to calculate an approximation.

Finally, what i've always found useful, is that KSP usually starts 'outer space' music as soon as you are actually in space, and stops playing the music the moment you reenter atmosphere. On Kerbin i know this is true, so its definitely worth a try on Eve.

The wiki says Eve's atmosphere extends to 96709m. You also want to watch out for the highest mountain peak at roughly 7500m. So it sounds like 97km is a good judgement.

The camera also shifts view once your apoasis and periapsis both rise above the atmosphere.

It is very easy to learn where the atmosphere of the planet starts. The game switch from normal time warp to x4 max physical time warp. (Just like during the assend). The Eve atmosphere starts at 102 km although you need to go as far as 95 km for the loss of orbit due to the aero braking become noticeable. So you for short time operation such as pick up crew 97 km is ok. But you may be hit by the bug that sometimes occurs when orbit of two ships pass throw upper atmosphere of the planet. This bug lock you from switching the ship or returning to space center. So if possible keep your ships out of atmosphere when possible.

I don't think that is quite right. On Kerbin the camera switches focus when your apoapsis is above the atmosphere and your periapsis is around 22km.

Hooligan Lab's balloons are a blessing for eve ascents. :P

True, make it far less hairy and you can do it from everywhere. It you combine it with the electrical propels you can make an blimp to move around with.

You don't save as much weight over an minimum Eve accent craft designed for high attitude but you get something more flexible and probably more realistic.

Yes Holliganlab is overpowered however its pretty plausible to lift 8 ton with an balloon.
