Agreed. Probes only seem necessary for interplanetary missions since even if you have to send a rescue mission to Minmus it's still in Kerbin's SOI and thus much easier to get to.

Its the first time that R&D has been implemented into the game, and it is still very much in development. As with most things in the game, there tends to be at least two developmental passes with the game's code/assets. I would give Squad the benefit of the doubt for now, as there are several features of the game that hasn't been developed, which will ultimately change how the tech tree looks; mining, space telescopes, fairings, solid-booster fuel plugs. When the new aerodynamic model is implemented, the order of parts in the tree will change based on necessity (nose cones for example)

I'm not going to assume that they will completely redo the science aspect. They had a chance to implement it as X in the first place, and they implemented it as Y. Why assume they'll go back to X? Especially since Harv thinks that a veteran player should be able to blow through the entire career mode in half an hour or something.

I agree that the tech tree is a little bizarre, but after playing for a few hours, it's also a lot of fun!

and were it less bizarre, it would likely be less fun, too easy to get a few powerful parts early that make getting the points for the rest too fast. And then of course people'd complain that career mode is over too quick... Probably the same people too that now complain it takes them too long...
