This is a future timeline that anyone can edit, adding what they think will happen in the future. Just remember, make it plausible and make it fit in with the rest of the events (or give a good reason why the rest of the events should be changed in the thread). Have fun!

POLL: When will FTL Travel Be Possible?

I feel like the Europa landings and colonization is a little too far-fetched. The radiation belts around Jupiter make exploration of Io, Europa, and Ganymede impossible unless there is a breakthrough in radiation shielding technology sometime between now and then.

edit: The Alcubierre drive too. Exotic matter doesn't exist and the warp bubble would fry anything inside of it. Plus, while the Alcubierre drive doesn't violate Relativity, it does violate Causality.

The Europa base could be partially buried under the ice, would that work? The first crew could have shovelled some ice on top of the hab

The Alcubierre drive is first mentioned in 2410, which is pretty much post-singularity. Also, in this future timeline, a complete theory of quantum gravity was made which allowed for Alcubierre FTL. Exotic matter was also discovered sometime between now and 2410, as it currently stands.

Personally, I'm on the fence about the Alcubierre drive too. Should I make a poll?

EDIT: I'm working on a poll.

EDIT2: Poll complete

It could work, but there is still the issue of getting to/from the base.

Also, someone is screwing with the timeline:

Ahh I had so much fun in the previous thread researching current missions to add to the timeline. Made some guesstimates on the current missions (like Hubble and Oppy). I'll add some more ESA / Indian / Chinese mission timelines :)

That happens too often, I get into the habit of checking recent changes to kill any vandalism. Vandalism doesn't really work on this timeline because reverts are so swift and painless.

The FTL poll's current results:

17 Responses

-8 for no

-9 for yes

--1 for Other (Cloning Teleportation)

--2 for Alternate Spacetime

--3 for Wormholes

--6 for Warped Space*

*One of these is counted under "Other"

Because the type allows you to check multiple types, they do not add up to 9.

I'm not sure when to stop the poll, I think I'll stop once it reaches 21 responses.

UPDATE:

19 Responses

-8 for no

-11 for yes

--1 for Other (Cloning Teleportation)

--3 for Alternate Spacetime

--5 for Wormholes

--8 for Warped Space*

*One of these is counted under "Other"

Since there is no way to turn the poll from the current majority, it has been decided that faster-than-light travel using warped space shall be the canon in this timeline. When this happens is still up to debate, with estimates ranging from "2035" to "Soonâ„¢".

  • 2 weeks later...

Someone tried to vandalise the timeline. A hint for all interested in doing so: it doesn't work. They were persistent, and had so little social obligations that they were able to change much of the 21st century. Two clicks later, all of this vandal's work was deleted.

EDIT:

I don't know about the "Vandalism" for the 4000BC one... I thought that one was rather clever and humorous.

Edit: I haven't looked at the actual doc yet. I'll do that from home on another Google account

I agree, but they don't call it a "future" timeline for nothing and it's meant to be more of a serious view of the future.
