Are crew reports stackable?

Recommended Posts

So if i save a crew report on the launchpad, will it be overwritten by a later crew report when orbiting the mun?

I don't understand why you can't save more then one of each type. Can't a kerbal just write on another paper and put it in file where all the other reports are stored in?

Crew reports can be transmitted at 100% efficiency so you don't need to store them. And even on Apollo they actually had a very limited quantity of paper since every ounce on the final module had to be lifted by additional fuel (which in turn had to be lifted by more fuel). A standard packet of printer paper is almost 5 lbs, which is was the Apollo astronaut's entire personal weight allowance (of their personal weight allowance they where permitted to carry at most 0.5 lbs of it down to the Moon with them in the lander).

Overall though it's about simplicity - one sample/report of each type is much more straight forward then either a complex weight system (where loading a Munar sample increases the weight of the lander and uses up a volume allowance for space inside) or a system that allows you to place an infinite number of items in the pod which would just be silly.

But aren't crew reports retrieved when recovering a vassal? which means no need to worry about antennas and electrical power loss.

But it doesn't corrolate with the fact that you can save 10 reports of different type each but can't save just two of the same type (with the latter one probably containing less data).

It's about simplicity. Do you want the devs and you to spend their time creating and playing KSP, or do you want an advanced cargo inventory simulator instead?

Thread is old, but maybe some still do not know this:

When doing a crew report the pod functions the same as a thermometer - or any other science device - as a thermometer it can only hold one "current experiment", the thermometer cannot be reused even in a different location until the last experiment has been transmitted, deleted or removed in EVA.

This can be done with crew reports too, they can be transmitted, deleted or removed in EVA and then stored in the same pod as a "stored experiment".

The pods have two pieces of code, one to make a crew report and one to store data. The first piece of code is the same/similar that enables all other science devices to do their thing, generating experiment data.

So, if you create a crew report and do not have enough power (early game with just power in the pod or limited batteries) to transmit every crew report you will be able to create during your voyage, you can EVA, grab the data witout even letting go of the ladder, reenter/click the pod to store the data - and you are ready to do the next report.

Mods with parts that have the ability to store data just like pods combined with e.g. ShipManifest will let you do this without going EVA.

I heard that you can have multiple reports and surface samples stored in the mobile processing lab. Is this indeed correct?

Yes. This is a mobile lab on the launchpad, kerbal jumped out 4 times to take a surface sample, they all fit in the lab.

.

Lord of Kerbol!!

So, that would be THE reason to bring along a science lab then!

Although I would like to recreate this functionality for a capsule to drop of at KSC. :)

Alternatively: Let the lab actually return all data when below 90km at Kerbin?
