Um.......I'm Stuck (tech tree)

Recommended Posts

Well, I have been to Mun and Minimus and back. Squeezing all the science I can from each trip, and I have squeezed the science out of Kerbin. Not sure if I can even make it to Duna for some new experiments...... Any tips for squeezing out some more science? (I havnt got samples from the dark parts of the Mun yet, its my next mission, but even then I will need much more)

I've only landed two places on Mun and one was that big crater with the black spot.

Anyways I can recommend leaving the Kerbin system and doing science while in the Sun's SOI and then head back to Kerbin. It's not too demanding a task and it's quick science :)

Also took me a while to discover that the thermometer, accelerometer, barometer and the other one I can't remember is good for getting a bit of science too :P better late than never right :3

You can definitely send a probe to Duna at your current tech level. To Eve, too.

The only thing I can see you're missing are drogues but you can research Gilly and Ike first and get them. Or use powered descent.

This is screenshot of my Duna probe which I made when I was at about your tech level. It has more than enough power, I was able to research both Ike and Duna with it and gain enormous amounts of science through repeated transmissions.

Both Duna, Eve and their moons should be within your reach with the tech you've discovered. Don't forget to perform experiments in the open space on the way. There are also a lot of science points to earn there.

By the way, when you can get to Eve, you can get anywhere, when you master the art of the Gravity Assist. Scott Manley has a video where he brings the Kerbal-X (that stock ship which usually makes it barely to the Mun surface) to Jool:

Send a probe to the sun.

I got about 460 science

Correct! Probes get more science the farther away from Kerbin you are. Personally, I just made a basic unmanned probe, slapped a couple of mystery goo containers to the side and launched it clean out of the solar system. Every few weeks (game time) I go back to check on it and rake in more free science points.

BTW: Am i the only one who sort of cringes when he reads about any number of different ´biomes´ on a lifeless body like the mun? I really wish, they´d change that label, as it is at least very debatable (if not outright wrong). How about ´regions´ or ´landscapes´ or, probably most fitting, simply: ´types of surface´, instead?

With that much of the tree unlocked, Duna and Eve should be a walk in the park if you make an unmanned mission.

What I did was to make a rocket carrying two small unmanned probes on radial decouplers. Got into Duna orbit. Decoupled one probe and landed it on Duna (go in shallow for optimum aerobrake, use chutes, land on low terrain and you'll not need to spend much fuel). Decoupled the other and went to Ike, where I landed.

Now, I had a satellite around Duna, a probe on the surface of Duna and a probe on the surface of Ike, all with a full set of science instruments. Make sure you remember to do science as you travel as well, then do science where they landed.

I think my total payload for that mission was around 20 tons, lifter and interplanetary drive stage excluded. Not that much to launch.

I think I'll tweak the probes a bit before Eve, making them rovers instead. That'll give me even more science.

One additional note:

If you are doing an Eve mission, consider the possibility of making really minimal landing probes. I suspect you could do them at around 1.5 tons, science and all. They really just need chutes and enough engine/fuel to push them out of a low orbit.

Then, just attach a bunch of them to your interplanetary drive stage, and when you arrive, make sure you get an inclined orbit (preferably polar). Then, it's just a matter of dropping off the probes on various places. You could easily get 6 or 8 such probes on your ship.
