Create a place to keep track of all data obtained

Recommended Posts

I started up KSP today and began throwing together a manned sample return mission to Minimus. Then I realized that I might have already done this, but I wasn't sure. It would be nice if there was a place where all of your previously obtained data was logged.

Maybe have another building called the Data Center. When you click on the building you're presented with a screen. The screen has a tab for each scientific instrument you've used, crew reports, samples returned, EVA reports, etc. Clicking on a tab will present you with a list of all measurements taken by that instrument (or crew report or whatever). This way if you want to know if you've already obtained samples from Minimus you can click on the Data Center, click on the Sample Returns tab, and look for an entry for Minimus. If it's there then you know you've already done a sample return mission. If not, then you haven't.

It's pretty easy to implement too. Just send a message to the Data Center saying to add the data each time you successfully transmit data or recover a vehicle.

Plant a flag :)

But yes, a tracker for all mission types would be good, especially if using a probe to visit multiple locations to gather science - no chance to plant a flag and no probe left behind as a marker.

This also would help non-static science locations (e.g. flying over desert etc).

Excel spreadsheets are your friend :)

Date

Moon/Planet

Biome name

Methods used to collect science

How much science was recovered

~edit~

Oh yes, flags are helpful too since we can't really tell what biome is what yet.

100% agree. I would guess that this is already on their to do list anyway.

The data is certainly stored already, they just need a way to get the data displayed.

I suggest though this could be integrated into the in-game DB. Currently when you click on the planet you get it's info. There could be more info added there, such as what sampling has been done etc.

This is a good idea. I don't know why, but I think this will be added in the near future. This because it would be a logical step for career mode.

Maybe this is something for the mission control building...

My understanding, both from what is currently already implemented in-game and from various WIP screenshots from SQUAD, there already exists an in-game "KnowledgeBase". This is currently accessible in the flight and tracking station scenes, and provides info on the current vessel / crew / celestial body.

Presumably it's a matter of making use of the UI by populating it with data collected from various sensors / science packages in the future.
