Gas planet two

On the wiki there is a page called "GP2" which says there is a planned second gas giant and also lists some of the moons. So when will it be implemented? I would love for it to be put in on the next update as ksp could do with some more planets/moons to visit :D

Last time I saw this question surface the answer was 'No more planets/moons until Squad finds a way to improve performance'.

I can't find that particular thread though, nor can I guarantee that actually is the correct answer.

In the future is the only thing we know about when, as with all things squad plans. It could get added in the next update but the focus is on career mode for now so IMO that is unlikely. Then again who knows, there will be an announcement soon as to what will be the focus of 0.23 as soon as the developers, maybe there will be a new planet thrown into the mix.

One thing that has been mentioned is that a planet discovery mechanic would be implemented first before more new planets get added. They will come eventually though.

EDIT: The technical problem that prevented adding more new planets has been solved in one of the last few updates. Basically before the game stored all the planet terrain data (or was it textures?) in memory when it didn't need it, like say Eve's terrain when you were at Jool. Now it loads it only when it needs it, also saving on memory use. At least that was my understanding.

When they were first talking about science and the Kerbal Knowledge Base that first came out with .20, there was something mentioned about come up with some kind of planet discovery mechanic as mentioned above and that they wouldn't be announcing new planets when they added them.

The planets at the moment are named after ancient Kerbal gods. Apart from eeloo which is going to be a moon of GP2.

The other planets couldn't be seen in the night sky by the ancient kerbal tribes so they haven't been named yet. These planets will be the Neptunes and Uranus' of our solar system.

Oh, so the later is going to be located at the ass end of the solar system

:sticktongue:

Sorry, I couldn't resist a good Uranus joke.

They could change their mind, but SQUAD did say when adding Eeloo that it would become a moon of the second gas giant at a later point, possibly with active geysers.

They are also planning on adding a planet closer in than Moho with lava and heat damage.

The second gas giant will have rings like Saturn.

That is all I am aware of that SQUAD has mentioned in relation to future planets. After the above, I hope they make a small gas giant like Neptune with a couple of smaller moons as well as add in a few small dwarf planets equivelent to Ceres and Vesta right around where Dres is now (Dres is great, but too large to represent Ceres, and one really egg shaped dwarf planet would be cool).

A couple of small moonlets for Duna would be neat too with even lighter gravities and SOIs than Gilly (hello Demos and Phobos).

Lastly, but not leastly, one or more really far out Kuiper belt type dwarf planets (maybe one with a tiny moon) would be neat.

I think that would be all she wrote though unless or until adding an actual asteroid belt (if ever feasible) and/or other star systems/comets

I agree I love eeloo and would be sad if it was made a moon

Why? Do you not realize that Pluto is much, much smaller than seven moons in our own system? Our own moon is almost six times Pluto's mass, and then there are the four Galilean moons of Jupiter Titan (Saturn), and Triton (Neptune), all of which are considerably bigger than Pluto. Basically, it's better to be a Titan-analogue than a Pluto-analogue; it's not a demotion for Eeloo to stop being a planet.

Besides, what's the point of Eeloo currently from a gameplay perspective? You go there once, just to say you did it, and then you have no reason to go there ever again. (As my ribbons show, I've done it. There's nothing there to see.) Compare to Jool's moons, where you'll go to the Jool system repeatedly; it's not just Laythe that gets all the traffic. (In fact, I've landed on Pol more than Laythe, since it's where my main Kethane fuel depot is.) Eeloo isn't even difficult like Moho, it's just... there. So when they add a second gas giant, and put Eeloo there alongside a couple other moons, it'll become a much more popular destination, especially if the planet is Saturn-like with visible rings (as opposed to Jool's boring appearance).

This is especially going to be true once the new resource system is put in place. A solitary planet is going to be difficult to refuel from, especially if that planet has no atmosphere to extract oxygen from to make fuel. Even if the planet is rich in resources, it will likely be missing one of the ingredients to make the various fuels. But a system of multiple moons/planets is MUCH better, since you can get one ingredient from one moon and another from a different one, and refine both at a space station orbiting the planet. Sure, they could add a unique resource to that solitary planet, but given that resources' only use is to make fuel, it's not cost-effective to haul a raw material back to civilized space just to turn it into fuel to replace what you spent bringing it back.

I really want trojan asteroids of Jool, including some small icy ones that we can move with a Jool gravity assist, and maybe an Eve and Mun one as well into Kerbal orbit to score big in a resource modelling future implementation.

There's plenty to see on Eeloo, I've been exploring it recently and there's plenty of beautiful places to see or mark for later bases.

I like it being the farthest plant out but wouldn't mind it being part of a Jool like system.

Wait for Christmas Eve. Maybe we get a nice present like the community had with Eeloo. Apparently, I wasnt part of KSP back then :(

Hoping for that as well.

If the tradition holds, we may have the entire milkyway in KSP by the end of this universe.

Eeloo doesn't look like a planetoid in deep space. It looks like a moon, similar to Europa. It has almost no craters, and nothing to generate those cracks. it really would be great as a moon of GP2, make a new Pluto analog called Bluto (Blutonium in the power source for RTGs in KSP)

GP2 is planned to have rings. From the KerbalKon, it was mentioned that the rings would be based upon the same code as what will provide weather on Kerbin and the other atmo'd worlds. GP2's skin is already done, though that may change or has been changed since KerbalKon, so once the weather coding is done, most likely we will get our second gas giant.

Maybe jool could gain a few extra moons as well? Also is it possible for a moon to have a moon? Tylo is very big and would probably have a moon if it was a planet (Orbiting the sun)?

Moons can theoritically have moons but it is statistically a very low chance. They would likely have an unstable orbit because of tidal forces from the parent planet and eventually be destroyed. The probability of a sizable body orbiting a moon rather than the parent planet is near 0 I believe...
