Please switch over to a 64-bit executable so more RAM can be used

Recommended Posts

Very few gamers are stuck to 32-bit executable's anymore as Windows XP support has been eliminated. The latest version of Unit support 64-bit and up to 16 Gig of RAM so please consider doing the same thing. That way we can run with a lot more mods with better texture quality than what we're stuck with no (plus it'l make things a lot easier for Kerbal's continued development). Thanks :)

This has been discussed before over and over again, and is on the what not to suggest list, but the fact still remains, the 64 bit version was very unstable so the devs are waiting for Unity to update to 64 bit. I believe the the Linux 64 bit version works so feel free to try that.

It's a problem with Unity, and there's nothing SQUAD can do about it. :)

Out of curiosity have Unity ever actually explained why they're so far behind with this for their engine? I mean I've read things in their forums claiming they were looking to implement it 3-4 years ago yet there's never been a clear response from them pass my eyes yet

They focus on smartphone/mobile and console features.

Spoiler alert: There is a 64-bit executable available, and the Linux fellows are already using it. However, for a horde of reasons (afaik entirely Unity-involved), the 64-bit executable is utterly unstable under a Windows environment. There are crashes all over the place, and it is simply too haphazard and unreliable for anyone to use, even for testing purposes. Until Unity does something about that, the only 64-bit experience KSP can offer is the Linux version, unfortunately.

For example, one unity windows-64-bit specific bug that got fixed more recently than the last time KSP updated their version of Unity involved the raycasting mechanic. It was a random crash to desktop type bug involving a feature that KSP does a LOT of. There's no chance KSP could have had a stable windows 64-bit client with that bug present. I don't know if it's the only bug of that category, in which case the next time KSP updates their Unity library we can get a working 64 bit client, or if there are other bugs.

Since at least some of the windows-64 bit issue is out of their hands, the devs have been looking more at memory optimizations than pushing for 64 bit, as that way any improvement can help everyone, not just those with 64 bit OS and more than 4GB of ram. That config is popular with people that consider their computer a gaming machine, but not so much among people that game more casually.

64-bit build is not just about memory - 64-bit processors give better performance running 64-bit code. And even casual gamers with not much memory have 64-bit processors pretty often today.

Let's hope Unity will get its 64-bit code fixed soon.

It's worth noting that not having a 64-bit exe is not out of the ordinary. There are only a handful of games that come with 64-bit versions, and most of those are more of a technical demonstration; the original Far Cry, for example, or Half life 2 (I don't think Valve even offers the 64-bit version anymore).

That's true but those games had clearly fulfilled their goals within their restraints. Since Squad have previously attempted a x64 build I think it would genuinely help them achieve their goals for KSP a bit easier and maybe create opportunities they may otherwise not be able to implement. It doesn't surprise me that we don't have an x64 build of KSP but it does surprise me that it's been on the plan for Unity for so long yet still hasn't been completely resolved.

Unfortunately, 64-bit support is on the [thread=36863]what not to suggest list.[/thread] Whenever the devs can get a stable build going, I'm sure they will release it.

But since this is on the [thread=36863]what not to suggest list[/thread], thread locked. Have a nice day.
