Reviewing Science Building!

Recommended Posts

In 0.22, there does not appear to be any way of looking back at that hard earned science that you collected. As soon as the mission ends, the science experiments are gone and the samples are no longer there.

Which got me thinking, what if we had a building in the Kerbal Space Center which allowed you to look back at all the science experiments you collected? It shouldn't be that hard to implement and if would be nice if you could always have those science experiments with you.

Here's my idea of how it would work: When you return/transmit your science, your science will also get automatically stored. If you've brought samples from the Mun and you bring it back, then it would go into a group called something like: Munar Surface Science.

There would be 3 types of sections:

[PLANET/MOON] Surface Science

[PLANET/MOON] Low Orbit Science

[PLANET/MOON] High Orbit Science

If you got a certain bit of science in low Munar orbit, that science would be stored and it would go into the Low Orbit Science group. If you were in high Eve orbit, any science you get would go into the High Orbit Science group.

Let me know what you think of this idea.

I'd like to look back on each planet/moon I've visited, and see the experiments as well. The information is stored in the persistent.sfs file, so why not be able to display it? It would also help me remember what I tested, and where, especially since once I get a landing down, I'm prone to set 2-3 simultaneous missions to the same body. In one case, I think I had a probe on almost every biome on Mun. Problem is, I didn't have ALL the biomes, so I can't recall which craters I'm missing. (Had to look in the persistent.sfs)

I think it could be done as a tab in the research building. As the tech tree is meant to be just an introduction, it wouldn't be used much later in the game otherwise.

I suggested some ideas similar to this in another thread.

Science per planet

Currently, science points are the same no matter were they are collected. Moving on to a harder planet is simple rewarded by more points, making points gain the motivating factor.

In sandbox, the motivations where more a combo of seeing if you could do it, and to go explore there- we didn't need to be pushed along.

Perhaps science could be collected per body. This would make it seem more purposeful when you go somewhere.

Going to Duna to find out about Duna, not just because you need more points.

This would be on top of the point earning system.

Data collation, and analysis.

Rather than just collecting points, it would be cool if you could gather actual data about the body, such as mineral compositions in a certain area, gravity data, terrain info etc.

Though the "Value" would diminish, you'd still get something out of doing multiple experiments in the same area.

Over time you could build up a profile of the planet, accessible in the R&D building. These profiles could be done in a way so it doesn't feel like you're just unlocking info, but collecting it. It could have tables, maps, graphs and messages from happy kerbal scientists.

Some basic information sorting would be nice, maybe. But that could be overkill.

Variance

In real life, data from experiments isn't away the same every time- there can be variation.

For example, if soil data gets added, surface composition tests could return values like this:

Duna plains regolith analysis:

Haematite 76.54%

Quartz 14.23%

Goethite 5.70%

Hydration: 0.51%

Other:

Frozen CO2: 3.02%

The amounts of different minerals could vary based on distance from certain points, so you don't have to travel for kilometers for different results.

This way, your rover could drill the dirt many times, and each time get a unique result after analysis.
