What happens if you add a mod part to a science node you already unlocked?

Title says it all, can you add mod parts this way or do you need to add them to a science node you haven't unlocked yet?

If it actually shows up in the node, you should be able to simply click on it to unlock it, as I understand things.

That has been my experience, you get a dot with a number on it in the tech tree view telling you that there are parts to unlock even though you've unlocked the node. Clicking on the node shows you the parts, and you can click each individual part to unlock that part.

^^ This. Yup, The parts just show up, you click on each one, then say "Yes" to "Do you want to research this part?", then it will show as "owned", and show up in the VAB or SPH like normal, and ready for use.
