Yes, developer-controlled servers are currently the industries way to go. But the primary reason for that is that this way they can squeeze out the last penny they are willing to pay out of their players. I really like that Squad appears to not blindly follow that trend!

no, they're the way to go because they're the only way to prevent griefers, hackers, and other lowlives from ruining the game experience of the rest of the community.

Whenever community run servers are tried, the end result is they end up as the dirty underworld of gaming where the only people having fun are the nasty little kids intent on causing trouble for everyone else.\

Just look at the endless stream of bad press about community run minecraft servers and illegal WoW servers.

Here is how servers should work:

they should be community owned/operated. Why?

1. Because most of the people running it will be forum members, who are, as far as I know, reasonable, responsible, and intelligent people.

2. It can be set up so you need to have a forum account to log on, which makes sense. (optional)

Also, I have faith in the fact that the game's complexity will discourage all of the squeakers/lowlifes/hackers/imbeciles/trolls/griefers from participating in the game. In this sense, it seems like the game is its own best moderator.
