Powered (no chute) Landings

Recommended Posts

I've read about this on the form and I can't believe you people do this! I just went into my first orbit and using the OPA makes it damn easy. I'm trying the micro tank and engine out because I wanted a better model, haven't used it yet. So tell me about how you guys do this, do any of your just do vertical lift off and landings? my orbit reentries are never smooth at all. Also, can you land the module in water and have it not explode?

It helps to first reduce your lateral speed. Locate the retrograde heading in your compass (the heading opposite to your current direction) and burn towards it. This way you can get a vertical-only fall.

From that point it's just a matter of regulating your falling speed by firing your thrusters straight down.

Yep. Watch your speed indicator, not the craft. Find the thottle value where you can hold it constant, and make tiny adjustments from that.

When you're almost down, looking at the rocket can help know when you're going to hit by seeing it approach its shadow.

So far i have only been able to do powered landings when still flying in the atmosphere. I havent been able to do one after orbiting. i am working hard on skilling up enough to do that though. When i do it i use the quad parachute adapter with the mini engine and fuel tanks to land.

Well, the biggest problem seems to be controlling the horizontal speed so that your ship doesn't topple over at touchdown.

Second biggest problem is controlling vertical speed so that you get a soft touchdown.

Third biggest problem is that apparently large sections of the planet are mined, so no matter how you touch down your ship will instantly explode - I have had this happen even on parachute landings on mountainous areas.

I've actually found winglets to be pretty handy for a powered landing. They'll lock you into opposition with your velocity, which makes killing forward motion simple (plus, they have nice large amounts of air resistance to help you slow down).
