Get to Mun... And return.. With no map view!

Recommended Posts

It's easier then it looks. Get to the mun, and return back to Kerbin without using map view at all. Those who have completed such a challenge will be in Crazed's Hall of Non-Failures

Also, to be in the hall of non-failures your entry MUST contain screenshots showing any part of the launch, The end report, the Mun encounter, and the kerbin re-entry.

You will be scored on how fast you have done so, this can be done by looking at your MET.

The Rules

• Stock only, completely stock. Stock. STOCK.

• No Mechjeb

• No debug menu or any form of cheating

HARDCORE MODE

• Go to Minmus, and back, WITHOUT MAP VIEW

Good luck!

Crazed's Hall of Non-Failures

• No one :(

Sorry, my vision must be failing me but I looked that over twice and no where does it mention that I have to submit an entry myself.

But it's considered good forum etiquete to do so.

now that we're not allowed to use the map view, can we at least use information mods like Kerbal Engineer? Maybe a separate list?

Second Paragraph, subsection listed "Is this challenge possible?"

-So test your challenge yourself first to make sure it is possible, you don't have to be successful but you'll soon know if the challenge has a hope of being completed.

All I am saying.

Apparently EVA resets the mission timer and I also forgot the final F3 screenshot, but I at least wanted to tell the story...

How I got to the Mun, by MechJeb ManJeb (each picture in an album corresponds to the #):

(1) I got sleepy on the pad because I flew all day and night yesterday instead of attending my computer science classes, but luckily I awoke to find the moon just over the horizon!

(2) In order to find the proper flight parameters, I had earlier sent off in "shotgun style" numerous ensigns unmanned probes, determining that ~3100 @ 100k would work.

(3) Indeed it did! (photo for official purposes only)

(4) I planted a flag to tell that stupid robot pilot to **** off. I don't need you to tell me how to suicide burn...I just set the throttle to 0.

(1) I took off again, carefully waiting until Kerbin was overhead. It was important to save fuel for the return trip to the Mun after getting back to Kerbin.

(2) I always preferred direct entry!

(3) Coming in hot!!

(4) Touchdown!!!

(1) One of the things we're scored on is our fast turn around times. Here I am, taking off immediately on a direct ascent to the mun. Can't beat that!

(2) Hmm, I'm pretty sure there's still more fuel. Maybe these yellow pipes are backwards. (Like in a trial attempt *cough*.)

(3) There's the ground--looks hard!

(4) Punchin' out! Bye engines :*(

(5) There's a lesson here...

I agree with Hodo and now I quote the relevant section

Is this challenge possible?

Many challenges we see are nearly or literally impossible to achieve, and usually very little thought has gone into them, these challenges just annoy people, waste forum space and show that the submitter hasn't really tried.

So test your challenge yourself first to make sure it is possible, you don't have to be successful but you'll soon know if the challenge has a hope of being completed.

And yes I know a lot of people have already told you that, but I just wanted to show the section that you said you could not see.

My apologies if I came across as rude I was not intending too

Here's a video from January of my going IVA only from Kerbin to Duna and back. The only times I went to map view or EVA were to reload parachutes and to set the planets as targets. All three of these were done while landed. I also used the lander can as my crew module because at the time (and maybe still?) it had the worst instrumentation of any of the choices, a radar altimeter, navball, and vertical speed meter only.
