Screen Recording Software

Hi,

I'd like to make a couple of small videos while playing KSP. I'm fairly used to the editing part (from video files created by my camcorder), but really know nothing about screen recording software. I'm using the Steam version on Windows 8.1.

Can anyone recommend software for this? It really is purely as a hobby project for a couple of really short clips, so cheap / freeware preferable. I do need to record sound as well, but really need nothing fancy and prefer something which doesn't hog resources too much! I don't really mind the recording format as I already have conversion tools.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Adam

I use camtasia. Of course, I also have to do screenrecordings for my job, so that makes it easier; Camtasia is not exactly free. But it's very, very good with lots of options like mouse-click effects (visual and audible) and the video editing software that comes with it is top notch.

Fraps is one of the best, little-to-no performance drop, high quality and resolution files.

Open Broadcaster Software, although for live streaming purposes, does quite a good job for recording the screen. But its passive method can introcude lags in the output file ... You need to have a good computer if you want to run it nicely.

And as its name suggests, it is free !

Fraps is what I use. High resolution, but it comes at a price. The files are HUGE. Bandicam is excellent too. Both are relatively inexpensive. I prefer Fraps though.

True, but if you put your files into any video editor you can easily compress them 50x while still maintaining at least 480p.

I generally use Fraps too. I've trialled camtasia, but it seems to take alot of RAM for me, lagging much more quickly than Fraps does. Fraps does come with huge filesizes, going for a gigabyte every few minutes, which you'll have to compress later.
