The Versatility Marathon Challenge

Recommended Posts

Can I assume the science team at 'Site A' can be in a regular lander? If the lander has a seismic accelerometer, is that sufficient science for this experiment?

Can the science machine at 'Site B' be the lander that brings the science team? Again, is the seismic accelerometer sufficient science?

The answer to all of these questions is YES.

Enjoy your trip Nitro. And Happy Holiday To All!!!

Thanks, if you guys want something extra to do during the break, I strongly encourage taking on the Jool 5 challenge level 3 as I'll be doing it myself today. I would like to give bonus points here for those of you who complete it and also make some special conditions to add more points. So for those of you who love points and didn't get as many from the missions as you had hoped, give it a shot. I would recommend that you build your landers now, but I'm not sure if you should attempt this with your versatility challenge ship. However, if you do complete this challenge with your versatility challenge ship, you will receive double your current score on the leaderboards. To do this you must complete the Jool 5 challenge at level 3 and you are forbidden from refueling during the mission. Otherwise follow the Jool 5 challenges official rules. I'll add more to this on Friday along with the new mission. Let me know what you guys think.

.....means that I've abandoned doing the Eve mission with a single sortie to Eve. As the Eve rescue + Gilly lander + VIC-20 got up and over 1000 parts, game became too lagged to play. Altering mission parameters to mode two.

@700NitroXpress: Enjoy your holidays and thanks for the great challenge!

edit: In keeping with clean'n'green space, I de-orbited the original Eve return pod and the two fuel upgrades to the VIC-20.

Mission 3 report Moho....

After having to completely rebuild and replace the XI-2 which was at best a moderate success, but was limited (parts count). I decided it was due for replacement after the bug ridden Eve mission. So the DX-2 which is a more tried and true design, but still new to this program was commissioned as a replacement. The ship was launched in the standard fashion, strap it to a giant rocket and blow it to space. But was anything but standard, offering room for up to a crew of 10 and having two large docking ports, one front and one aft, and powered by 3 large nuclear boosters and supplemented buy 3 ion engines and over 10k d/v the ship was prepared for almost anything. Equipped with state of the art communications gear, remote command and control functions, the DX-2 was setup far better than the XI-2.

After the ship was refueled in orbit the first challenge for the crew was receiving the first part of the mission package, the seismic assembly. Weighing in at just over 30 tons it was not heavy, but it made up for this in shear bulk which made transporting it to orbit a challenge in itself. But seeing as this program specializes in space plane SSTOs it was not a challenge I was afraid of. So we transported the part up in our Space Plane model number 406 type V sub group A, or SP-406VA for short.

Yes really, it is that big.

Before the mission was launched the DX-2 recieved its landing module which was also launched by a space plane SSTO. But this time a large cargo hauler was not needed for the just under 40 ton lander, so the old tried but true SP-313 Orca was called up to transport the load. (no pictures were taken for this, only because I just didn't think to take any for a 20min operation that was pretty routine for me.)

The mission was set underway as soon as the launch window opened for Moho. The trip wasn't a long won and everything went mostly to plan, the ship burned a bit more fuel than expected slowing down into orbit of Moho, which would only make the job of the LKM lander module crew that much harder. Luckily though the the DX-2 arrived almost in perfect orbit to set the seismic assembly down on the target site and the science team in the LKM lander module on the other side with in two orbits. That and both zones were in partial sunlight which made it that much better.

The seismic assembly was remotely piloted down and landed without a hitch and was left until the science team was in place and the DX-2 was back in comms range of the SA.

After the seismic charge was fired off the science team finished up their first mission and started on the second mission, refueling the DX-2.

YdNWBBu.jpg

It only took them 10 trips to refuel the DX-2 to 80% fuel load for the return trip back to Kerbin. After a 18 day trip back to Kerbin the DX-2 burned most of its remaining fuel to circularize its orbit and prepare for unloading of science information and crews. (that will be done at a later time, by another SSTO spaceplane)

New missions will be up later tonight, sorry for the delay.

Great, take your time.

BTW I am done with the third mission, my report is in and in a nut shell this is what I did.

I replaced the current craft, mostly due to bugs and part count. Not completely satisfied with the replacement but meh, honestly I would rather use a SSTO space plane but I haven't spent that much time in my design lab to come up with anything new or inspiring. Even though I do have ones that would do most of the basic parts of these missions without a problem, it is the unusually large cargo units you have been tasking in the last mission that turned me off from replacing my XI-2 with SP-406VA or SVO-25 Orca II. I refuse to design a ugly open air cargo carrying SSTO is just not my style.

I only took one SA unit to Moho, couldn't attach more if I wanted to, and I had one lander, that landed a team at the opposite part of the planet. Didn't see a need to send a second team down at the first sight with the SA unit and leave them there without a shelter while I landed another team on the other side of Moho. It wasn't logical, realistic or even practical.

Granted I did take 10 Kerbals there but only landed 2 of them on the surface, I needed to maintain a minimum number of crew on the ship for communications reasons.

I was very interesting to read about this challenge so i got tempted to join.

This series will be a big challenge for me, but i will learn allot.

Ship name: Nome I1

47t and place for 5 kerbals. Total 8 docking ports.

Engine: 2 * LV-N

With 7000+ dV the qualification trip to mun was easy. Nome I1 is back now at my small space station and refueled.

VIC-20 Mission 2

The VIC-20 navicomp was unable to process Mission 2 - Mode 3, requiring a change to Mode 2. The Eve science landing team ascended to the refueled VIC-20 on a S5 style lifter, while the GillyMcGooly lander utilized the S1-B style lifter. The third stage of the Eve landing team lifter will assist the VIC-20 during the Eve transfer burn and will be dropped into an Kerbin impact trajectory.

The assembled Eve mission will depart in 41 days.

Mission details:

  • GillyMcGooly Lander: Two stage, Eve-Gilly, Gilly-Eve two-crew science lander
  • Eve landing team: Two-crew science lander. Mass: 13.2 t

Mission 3 report Moho... 0.23 is near, I'm too lazy to launch mission 3.

Below is the complete set of Moho craft. Any one interested to carry out the Moho Mission for me?

About mission 4...

Question:-

1) Above means..2 launches from Kerbin to Duna...in separate time frame, Am I correct?

2) Does re-entry back to Kerbin need heat shield?

3) Does lifting rover from Duna surface to Dun orbit need heat shield?

Thanks.

I forgot to mention the mods i use. Right now Only MechJeb and Kerbal Alarm Clock.

I am slowly working on Mission 1. 4 satellites docked to core module. Hopefully i get time to get up the other parts to the core ship tonight.

I finnished mission 1 just before the release of 0.23

Littering the system 2*-5 points = -10 points

Jet engines are for planes +5

Mission Complete with 2 satellites deployed and one landing per moon = + 150

Polar and equatorial orbit on mun + 10

Polar and equatorial orbit on Minimus + 10

It was a fun trip and i learned allot on what to do and not. Having satellites on one side and lander on other side made it very unbalanced so orbital maneuvers was challenging :) Could only use about 50% throttle. Above that and it would turn to left to much....

I left my non working rover at Kerbin.

Sirine: I see your post and I'll get to it either really late tonight or really late tomorrow night. I'm super busy right now.

Hodo: I didn't forget about your Moho mission report, I should get caught up here before the weekend.

Finwen: Those mods are fine, I also see your mission report. You'll get added to the leaderboards by this weekend as well.

On a side note: I did a mission out to Duna to test some of the ideas from the Duna mission. I made a rover garage that a rover on the surface can dock to. For the mission, it would just need to get back into orbit after the rover had been dropped. So I would have to drop the rover first, drive around, then drop the retrieval container and dock on the surface, then send it back into orbit. In these pictures, I have my rover garage on the surface of Duna. There's also a mission video if you guys are interested in ideas.

Just a little update. One of my debris touched the upper atmosphere so after watching it for a few hundreds of orbits it deorbited itself.

Littering the system 1*-5 points = -5 points
