Well. I'm hosed.

Starting to seem as if my machine is finally on the cusp of giving up the ghost.

It's not recognizing my graphics cards anymore. I might be able to fix it, but this is just the latest in a flurry of issues I've been having more and more often. Given I'm taking care of a parent with a severe illness, there is no room in the Whack budget anytime soon for a replacement.

If I can't fix this and I vanish for a long time, it's because of this. Just giving those of you a heads up... just so you're not left wondering what happened to the Whack.

Stupid alienware machine and dells stupid outdated drivers from 2010 that you HAVE to use... Don't buy alienware, kids. They stop providing new drivers almost immediately and they force you to use theirs.

Well, the onboard low power GPU is running. The basic graphics one. That's nice. But I can't switch it over to the dual Geforce 280ms. Also why my desktop monitor isn't getting a signal.

Never Dell. Never again. I hates it forever.

oems, lol.

ive been building my own since '99. costs less, and you get a solid machine that you can repair when it breaks down.

Yeah, I had a momentary lapse of stupidity when I bought this thing. Was expecting to do a lot of travelling that didn't pan out, and I wanted something I could game with that I could take with me.

Never, never, never again. I'm sitting here with a pad and pencil and trying to hammer out a budget to make replacement possible within twelve months. Item one: Quit smoking.

#EDIT: Progress suddenly made. Might be able to rescue this bloody thing.

#EDIT2: Monitor suddenly working!

Don't give up Whack, I believe in you!

My own computer problems seem trifling by comparison, I've been hit by the old Dell "Your charger cannot be recognized" bug. Now my computer's running at reduced speed and KSP is unplayable.

I'm sure you'll figure something out.

I can get the computer to work, but sans geforce 280ms. So onboard video only. And no plugged in monitor will work. Tonight I'm going to mull over keeping it that way in the time being to keep me busy and so I do not lose what is left of my mind from boredom. I may be able to kerbal. I may not. We will have to see.

And there's always Dwarf Fortress!

Minecart Control to Urist VanHaul

Drink your rum and put your game face on

(Ten) Minecart control (Nine) to Urist VanHaul (Eight)

(Seven, six) Commencing countdown (Five), waterwheel on (Four)

(Three, two) Check the brake (One) and may Armok's (Blastoff) love be with you

This is Minecart control to Urist VanHaul, you've really made the grade

And the engravers want to know what shirt you wear

Now it's time to leave the cart if you dare

This is Urist VanHaul to Minecart control, I'm slamming into the wall

And I'm floating in a most peculiar way

And the stalagtites look very different today

Here am I hurled from a cart far above the floor

Microcline is blue and there's nothing I can do

Though I'm past one hundred thousand feet, I'm feeling very still

And I think my minecart knows which way to go

Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows

Minecart control to Urist VanHaul, you've left the track, there's something wrong

Can you hear me, Urist VanHaul?

Can you hear me, Urist VanHaul?

Can you hear me, Urist VanHaul?

Can you...

Here am I flying through the air, far above the floor

Microcline is blue and there's nothing I can do

18 months ago I built my first rig, using fairly cheap components. A few weeks ago I built a new one, with dual HDDs utilizing 2 6 Gb/s SATA ports. The saddest thing to know is that I love portability, and nobody has made a laptop designed to hold removable components. The best you can upgrade is the CPU, HDD, or RAM. If they made a laptop with a full PCIE port, I'd be in love.

hard drive speed is the big bottleneck right now. thats where ssds come into play. when i got one i was actually amazed by what it did to my file copy performance. i got a 500gig samsung 840 evo. which i split into 320 gig for data, and the rest for the os/proggies. this arrangement is nice because i can format c: without loosing data. some files need to be on c:, but thats what junction points are for, i have a batch script to set those up for me.

On a side note, I might, *might* have pulled this machine back from the brink of death. Might. Maybe I'll be back sooner than I thought.

I've gone from computer having to be powered down the hard way every 3 minutes to up and running for 20 with no craziness. Progress!

On another side note, you know an alienware laptop can punch a hole in sheet rock if you throw it sidearm like a discus?

Sounds like the power supply. Electronics hardly ever `come back from the dead` but power supplies cause your machine to reboot/BSD/CTD when you use the extra power for 3D and you get a voltage spike or drop. They can revive and work fine for a week then just die.

Recently I found a machine out the back that had been dumped. brought it in, turned it on, seemed fine. Tried to use the gfx card and BLAM instant hard reboot. replaced the power supply with one I had lying around and it worked perfect so now the daughter in law has a core 2 duo at 3.1Ghz, 8Gb ram and a 7950.

If you have the option, I would suggest to borrow a power supply and see if your machine is stable.

It is a laptop. Current annoyance is it will simply freeze up. Repeatedly. Like within five minutes repeatedly. Sometimes it'll last as long as an hour. Surprisingly, if I go into a full screen game, it'll last much longer.
