parachutes disappeared before landing

I was landing one of my larger lander's back on Kerbin. Once i got below 500 they deployed as normal. About 30-50 meters from the ground i was using my engines to help slow down a bit more then suddenly my chutes disappeared and the symbol on the stages showed red?

My only though it i got the craft too slow and so the game cuts them?

Yes, if you start going back up it "cuts" the chutes. So be careful.

As long as the craft is going below about 5-10 m/s, the craft should be good on chutes alone. Try to burn to that range if you do have to use the engine.

Someone should fix this... and you can't use parachutes on the ground, either. So no SSTO's with drag chutes to slow down, like the Space Shuttle.

But yeah, your engine reduced your velocity to zero, and the chutes cut because that's what the code tells them to do.
