This is simple challenge. Show us how fast your rocket can go in kerbin sphere of influence. Record Speeds will be updated once week.

Rules:

* All stock parts! But with stock parts you can try anything.

* Enable SAS on launchpad, go straight up don't maneuver rocket.

* Make sure you got enough SAS force and thrust if rocket starts to tilt result would not be valid

Prograde vector centre must be inside 80 degrees circle:

* Throttle is free to use. Use as low or as much as you want.

* Speed must be achieved in kerbin SOI.

* You must take pod with kerbals aboard, pod size must be same as top fuel tank size

* When your rocket is out of fuel that speed would be your result, relative to surface speed.

* To prove your result Screenshots from launchpad, 10k, 100k & final result or video.

- Probably many of you are wondering what the heck is point in this. Simply to know who got rocket with most powah! And I think we can all agree want to see others powah machines in work!

Happy launches! For example here is my launch and I will put it into list to boost challenge spirit:

Rocket Speed Records:

1. TUFOM 5074m/s

2.

3.

4.

5.

If you want to post a challenge, perhaps you could post it in the Challenges subforum.

I can also see some loopholes in your rules. How is "out of fuel" defined with multiple stages, for instance? Even if I start vertically with no steering I can still get out of Kerbin's SOI with fuel left in higher stages. And I don't see staging forbidden so I assume it's allowed under the "you can try anything" clause.

While you're speeding by the Sun, perhaps you can adjust your orbit next time to swing by the Challenges forum instead of General Discussion for this sort of thread...

...Hmm. Speaking of which...

*detonates an anti-matter bomb*

There you go, back on course. Challenges. This looks about right. :D

Without further enhancements, this challenge is pretty much identical to the "maximize your delta-V" challenge.

To differentiate, I might suggest that you require that the maximum speed be your speed relative to Kerbin without ever having left Kerbin's SOI and/or before the mission timer reaches some arbitrary value (10 hours, say).

Why?

Because otherwise the obvious winner will follow this strategy:

- Build ship to get into orbit, then have the rest of the ship be composed of nuclear and/or ion engines.

- Turn on engines, leave burning as you walk away from the computer.

- Come back several hours later when you are at or near solar escape trajectory.

- Turn aroundand burn for an intercept with Kerbin (so that you end up with a speed inside Kerbin's SOI).
