Comet Ison Destroyed!

Scientists believe that Comet Ison was destroyed on it's encounter with the Sun.

That's sad It had a lot of news coverage. It would have been a great eye opener for lots of people. seeing how cool/ beautiful astronomy can be.

I didn't even get to see it other than in the photos that were taken

I believe Jupiter and the Moon are Lined up, that should be something to see!

For Being dead, it sure looks alive in this image:

Look at the width of the tail.compared to the diameter of the sun (represented by the white ring in the center)...

Trouble is that, on the way in, it was bright enough to cause very noticeable saturation spikes in the image. And even then it was only determined to have an apparent magnitude of somewhere on the order of +0.5.

It may well have survived better than they first thought, but its prospects of becoming the "comet of the century" seem dim.

ISON is definitely disrupted, but something definitely made it out. What sort of coma and tail it'll release is very, very much up for debate.

Pity; it's due to make its closest approach on my Dad's 80th birthday, and a big showy comet would've been great help marking the occasion.

Instead of one big one I'm sure well see a line of small comets now. Hopefully atleast.. something had to make it through.

Edit: Apparently the comet lives. That article changed its title. I gotta try and figure out how to download SOHO images.

This is why we shouldn't label comets dead at the first sign of struggle. There's definitely something left of ISON in my opinion at this point, now the question becomes will it persist, and if so, how big is the leftover and how bright it will get?

Well, it seems like the answer to "Will it persist?" may turn out to be "No." The coma is rapidly losing brightness.
