Beyond Kerbin: Convenient Locations for Space Stations

Jool and Duna make the best places for a Station I find.

I like to use Val as my main Station in the Joolian system. Low escape velocity while still big enough for a descent extended orbit to make remote tech 2 contact fairly easy. Set a kethane factory on it and it becomes the perfect fueling station.

In .21 I had everything on Laythe (Kethane, and EP Launcher) but the atmo made it more complicated then needed to maintain my outer system supply lines.

Val is easy to tranfer anywhere else in the system, easy to land on and leave, low delta v with still enough mass to keep things (like Rendvous) easily controlled.

Getting ready for my push to the outer systemsin .22 and since I just started using remote tech I am being a little pickier about infrastructure.

I prefer to have a station just outside the orbit of Tylo, because from there, getting home is fairly cheap, you just need to set up a slingshot with tylo at the right time.

Aerobreaking is the biggest fuel saving maneuver you can perform, so if you're running on fumes, you don't want your station in a spot where you need to perform a significant burn to get an orbital rendezvous.

I intend on putting my Jool station between Vall and Laythe, as they will be my most visited moons. I have a station around Duna which acts as a Kethane storage facility for m Duna and Ike miners.

Yep, that's why I chose Laythe, it takes 50 m/s to get to Orbit, and 500 m/s to escape. And only another 500 (much less with Tylo assist) to get back to Kerbin.

One general station in orbit around Kerbin. 'Cause you gotta.

One small refueling station in orbit around the Mun. This is where my Mun shuttle Bus docks when it's not grabbing incoming modules for the surface base and carrying them down.

I plan on:

Observation and emergency refueling stations in orbit around Duna, Laythe, and Eve.
