Just the same way as any other program. Very slowly and carefully.

I don't use Gimp(I tried). You can if you want to but I find it very difficult. (this is probably because I have very little knowledge of gimp)

I use pixaki (an ipad app) but there's plenty of other applications specificaly for making pixel art. (For windows Mac and Linux)

Some tips:

Make an outline of what your drawing before you fill in the details.

Shade last

Be patiant
