Setting something as a target that is not in orbit?

Recommended Posts

I have been curious if it is possible to set a target on something that has landed on the surface of a planet or moon? My main reason for this is to setup a rescue mission and would like to land the vessel as close as I can to the original site if at all possible. Also this would be done without mods, I am sure there is a mod that could do this for me (mechjeb maybe?) but I want to do it by hand if possible. I currently do not have anyone stranded, but I want to do a video showing my unmanned lander pod actually working, since I found out my rescue setup does in fact work the way I thought. Thanks in advance!

It is entirely possible. Simply left click in map view, then select set as target. It's that easy. Also, Mechjeb, while it does have the option to autopilot, will totally allow you to land manually (And provides a landing prediction and distance from target option)

Thanks for that, I didn't want to go stranding any Kerbals before knowing I could do that. I may use mechjeb to just help get the distance and locator to the landing since it is not needed to land.

I personally love Mechjeb for all the data it gives you. I rarely use Auto-pilot (It doesn't take the differing drag from chutes into account until they are deployed for example) And it has been known to totally screw up landings, but it really does help get close (My best unassisted Mechjeb landing was 900m N of target)

A bit off-topic but how are you using MechJeb? It gets me within a meter of my landing targets most of the time (to the point that I need to swerve to avoid landing on top of my target). That's non atmospheric though

Actually what you saying would be helpful in what I want to do, if you don't mind sharing. I only use Mechjeb to do my docking, until I get better at doing so myself. If you have a link to a video that would be easier for to watch or just message me with the info I would really appreciate the help.

I pull up the landing guidance, set a target, and try to land my predicted landing marker up with it. This was also atmospheric, I haven't ever used it on an airless world. (It's easy enough to just eyeball it.) I also play with Deadly Reentry so I can't just adjust my orbit to enter the atmosphere where I need to be.
