EVA control misbehavior

Recommended Posts

I am unable to dependably orient an EVA-ing Kerbal, making it difficult to get him back aboard.

According to the wiki page on key assignments, <spacebar> should orient the free-falling Kerbal to face in the same direction I am looking. However, this works only about one time in maybe a dozen or 15 attempts. Usually, pressing the spacebar has no effect, although it usually works the first time I use it on a given EVA.

Without this control, you have to do some weird estimate of transformed coordinates to translate the Kerbal's left-right-forward-back reference to your line of sight to the capsule. I have sometimes made this work, but my lower orbits are becoming hazardous due to the presence of frozen and starved Kerbals.

Kerbals orient themselves to the camera's plain when you thrust with RCS, and by changing between camera modes (Free, Chase and Orbital) you can change the plane the Kerbal uses.

It'd be nice if we had more control than this and I don't know why it's restricted in this way as it can be a real pain at times.

I noticed an option in the settings menu today (as it happens) called something like "EVA aligns to camera". I am used to the behaviour now so I left it on, but I imagine if you turn it off Kerbals will behave like pods.

I don't know if it's a new setting, if I knew about it before I did a lot of EVA's I might have turned it off...

Hey,

I have a smilar EVA problem with the Kerbals.

I can't make him orient in pitch and roll.

No matter how I position the camera he always faceing the same way. Only changes his orientation in yaw axis. I can look at his feet and top of his helmet and blast anyway I want, he doesnt reorient. What am I missing?

Easy.

1. Get the astronaut out.

2. Unlatch him from the ladder (press space). Press R to engage the rocketpack.

3. Press "back" (S button) for less than a second. The astronaut will orient himself along certain axis (we don't care which particular one that is).

4. Accept his axis as the ones you will have to work with. Rightclick-orient your view so that you see the astronaut from behind.

5. Now you can control him with the ijkl (kinda like wasd) for translation (moving sideways). EDIT: Shift/Ctrl for up/down.

6. EDIT: your up/down direction (reference plane as it is known) will stay the same, but if you rotate the camera so that you are not seeing the astronaut exactly from his back, a momentary press of "forward" or "back" (I or K) will orient him towards the spot your camera is looking at (mind the general (up/down) plane, which will NOT change).

There it is. Once you tried it, it is fairly intuitive : )

P.S. Sorry for edits, my wife/kid came home just as I was writing this. Chaos ensued, and my descriptions lost their preciseness. Corrected those now as I could : )
