Starting career mode: Money/early career mode

Recommended Posts

Hi all, just a few quick questions.

1. Haven't played since long before career mode was introduced. I was reading up on it and watching some videos before jumping in. I kept seeing that money/cost of parts was something new to career mode. However, I've been building my first rocket with the few parts that I have, but I don't see a running cost anywhere, but each part does have one. Am I missing something?

2. Also, is an antenna required to do science/send data back, etc?

3. I was checking out Scott M's first career mode video "Kerbal Space Program - 0.22! Lets Do Science! Lots Of Science" and I notice that he has all his fuel tanks stuck together without any structural pieces. I cannot get this to happen, what gives?

Thanks!

There is currently no budget for career mode, so parts costs are meaningless.

It sounds like you are in the spaceplane hangar instead of the VAB. Try the taller building. And finally, fuel tanks should stack just fine without any other pieces.

There's no monetary cost of part purchase or usage (yet). Squad have said that there will be some kind of budget system later, but no details as yet.

- It's going to be very hard for Squad to get this right, to keep it 'fun' and ensure you can't get yourself stuck without enough parts to make a flyable craft. I'd rather they take the time to get the mechanisms and balance right than announce something that they have to backtrack on!

2. Also, is an antenna required to do science/send data back, etc?

An antenna is only needed to transmit science back to Kerbin. If you recover the part of the craft with the data in it then you'll get the science without transmitting.

- In .23 most experiments give much more science if recovered back to Kerbin as opposed to transmitted.

Crew Reports and EVA Reports give 100% on transmit, and a pod can only have one Crew Report in it so it's a good idea to transmit those two.

Move the fuel tank around until it 'snaps' into place on the end of the previous one. It's much easier to fit tanks underneath than on top.

Throwing in one more... is it possible to make all the new parts for a ship to come up vertical instead of horizontal? I don't remember this being the case before.. but changing each individual piece is annoying :S

That (and 3) sounds like you're building in the Space Plane Hanger, where everything defaults to horizontal for building spaceplanes.

You want the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), tall thin one, for building rockets.

Thank you!

Clarifying the last question, he has them stacked side by side, not on top of each other. Is that what you mean? I can get them to stack in a column just fine, but he seems to have the sides sticking together too, resulting in multiple columns.

yeah, you can attach things radially just fine, the VAB doesn't like it when the parts clip, but you should be able to do it with a little patience. Sometimes I've found that if you can't get something to attach one way, rotate the rocket around and you might be able to attach it from another angle.
