Spaceplane on EVE

Recommended Posts

Preamble crap

I have recently made a trip to Lythe and back with a spaceplane to test the new R.A.P.I.E.R Engine. It was my first one I have made and was super happy with the results.

I used about half the fuel or less to get off Lythe than i would with a rocket. And landing was very nice. I was 100's of miles off target and i just glided to it.

Actual question:

I'm wondering if anyone has played with them on Eve?

I think they would be great to land right on eve's highest point (to make take off easier.)

But without the 2000 ISP jet engines i don't know if it would take too much fuel for a rocket motor.

I would like to do this 100% stock. I would just like to hear other's thoughts on it before i waist an hour building it.

... Not to mention that taking off from Eve to orbit is probably the single most difficult feat to accomplish in KSP. It usually takes fairly big and specially engineered launch vehicles :P

There are mods that provide electric-powered propellers, which can let you fly around efficiently. That and balloons are your best bets if you're open to mods; otherwise, planes on Eve don't help you -- you're better off flying straight up.

Then there are other mods, one of which I was working on for a while, that use a unique type of engine which can in fact fly on Eve, and Jool, and even Duna.

If you had jets on Eve, it would be an amazing place to try an SSTO.

Eve is a fantastic place for flying. It's atmosphere is thick as soup and extends up to the heavens. It's gravity well, however, is akin to a black hole.
