[WIP] MSI's Infernal Robotics - Model Rework (v02 Pre-Release Beta)

Just sayin', but I am quite sure I saw structural angular trusses somewhere not long ago. You might have to have a bit of a dig around the forums, but that is still easier and quicker than having ZodiusInfuser doing them all over.

Edit: there ya go, found it on page 11.

I recall there being an F-35 style VTOL hinge available for IR, but I can't find it now. Any chance we could get that remade? I kind of need that for my VTOL designs (they look ugly with normal hinges).

I agree with previous poster, as to the one part i'm missing atm, is a 6-way hub, or a 0.25/0.5m part to put trusses radially.

I recently saw a mod that offers different types of Rockomax hubs, including three way and six way hubs. For smaller parts you can use the hexagonal truss as a center piece.

Yes but the point is that it would be nice to not have to figure out the resize numbers on our own. Zodius has the part models and can make the hub parts that would be exact fits for his parts.

Well, a little effort is expected from players. Figuring out resize numbers is not hard and I think it is a common courtesy to do everything you can yourself before you ask someone else - who is already doing a lot for your pleasure - to do it for you. If you are not putting any effort into it, why would others do so?

Most developers are glad to help with requests that a player simply cannot get done by himself, but if they have to run all kinds of errands they do not get any real work done.

I'm not asking him to do all the work although he does have the models and is the only one that can make the textures work. I'm simply expressing the opinion that it would be far easier for him to make the parts to fit than for us.

Now now. As I said before, I'm happy to do parts people suggest but it could take some time, so of you wish to rescale a part to get the same effect here's some numbers for you.

Pivotron Basic Node offset = 0.3m

Right-Angled Rotatron Node offset = 0.35m

Scale other parts by the inverse of that and functionally you'll get what I eventually plan to create (when I have time).

Just a heads up that I'll be releasing a new version of the rework tonight to coincide with the upcoming IR version 0.16.

For this you will need to delete all your current Rework parts for the new set, as parts have been re-ordered to plan for the eventual switchover from legacy to rework. Will also be including the Extendatrons! These make use of new functionality with 0.16 to scale linear translation, so another reason to upgrade :D

I was making some spaceplanes in KSP and found out that making foldable wings is very beneficial at hypersonic speeds during re-entry.

Here's an example of what I mean: Spiral spaceplane. Look at its wings.

os_termo.gif

To make these wings I'm currently using standart infernal robotics hinges. But they are very big and some parts of them are visible through the wings:

I'd like to have a hinge relatively long to its width and without not needed parts extending from the wing.

What do you think? Or has it already been suggested?

It hasn't been suggested before but its been on my list for quite some time, as I really want to make fully foldable wings like this :D

Yet to come up with a design I'm happy with as its not possible to make a version that suits every possible wing size and style.

Is it possible to stretch hinges? Imagine having one base hinge like the hinge from original IR pack which is already folded in parallel, but thinner not to occupy too much space between wings. By changing its length and height it would be possible to make it suitable for (almost)every wing.

>>>>> Fresh Extendatrons <<<<<

This update coincides with the latest IR 0.16 release, adding support for the scaling of translational parts. Its recommended that you delete your MSI folder and download everything fresh, as the directories for this rework and legacy parts has been altered in preparation for a switchover in the future. Also, if you have TweakScale installed just because of this mod you can delete it as MSI now includes its own version (nothing bad should happen if both stay around though).

Enjoy!!

It's possible to do full scaling, but I don't think stretching is currently an option. Plus I would want it to happen in a procedural way that maintains the proportions of certain sections.

Quick fix for anyone whose Structural parts are missing after the update:

It looks like the Parts/Structural_Probe/ folder needs to be moved inside the Parts/Rework/ folder.

Thanks for spotting! Appologies. New download is up in the OP.

So I was thinking... is there much point in keeping the original models now? Or can I just get by with the rework? Are there any major omissions of parts in the rework? I'm fine with stuff like the VTOL hinge not being there, but as long as it has rotational pieces (check) and translation pieces (check), I'm pretty satisfied.

Oh and just a thought: would you consider making a slimmer rotatron similar to the original docking washer? The current one is unnecessarily bulky for such an application.

Only thing not accounted for is an adjustable rail (which I use the most out of all of them) and the gantry system. Everything else is basically replaced. To be honest, delete what you don't need. I'm not ready to remove the parts from the pack because ZI (correct me if I'm wrong) has said they are unfinished due to the skinning not being final.

The main things that are lacking are docking washers and gantries; however, it will be quite some time before they get replacements as they fall under my plans for Station_Robotic rather than the current Probe_Robotic phase. If you want to switch over I'd suggest deleting the parts that have replacements, so the hinges, pistons and rotatrons.

I may look at making the current Rotatron Basic slightly smaller as I kind of agree with you, but we'll see.

The Adjustable Rail is an odd part that I have to think about, because it's specifically intended for surface attachment unlike the rest. This may end up tieing into my plans for foldeable wings.

And yes, until the parts are textured they won't be included within the main IR release.

Could you add 1.25m size for your robotic parts? Should be easy with TweakScale. There are some large-scale applications (not to mention standing in for a VTOL hinge) that this would be very useful for.

Also, where is that plane from?

For me 1.25m parts (and by extension 2.5m) deserve their own dedicated set of parts. This would be a smaller selection than the current offering (got 5 ideas so far), hence me not making the current ones support that size. If you want to add such sizes you can easily do so by modifying Rework_Tweakscale.cfg within the parts directory.

That plane is from Fallout New Vegas. Remember walking past one and thinking, "Oooo, new hinge ideas" :P

Do forces and strength also scale with the TweakScale scaling?

The attachment nodes scale, but I don't think the IR joint strength changes.

Speaking of which, you just made me remember I bought Fallout New Vegas in a sale a while ago. But I digress.

That is unfortunate. I feel that scale should be reflected in strength as in real life, but I also understand that this is easier said than done. Without it, scaling is a tad more cosmetic than functional.

It's currently hardcoded anyway. I honestly didn't want to deal with parts falling apart when things were moving too fast. Before 0.23.5 release if you had a rotatron that spun too fast, it would fall apart, now it wiggles really wild and crazy but it stays attached. I prefer it this way.:

joint.breakForce = 1e15f;

joint.breakTorque = 1e15f;

// And to default joint

part.attachJoint.Joint.breakForce = 1e15f;

part.attachJoint.Joint.breakTorque = 1e15f;

part.attachJoint.SetBreakingForces(1e15f, 1e15f);
