The darn thing didnt just survive rentry, it came down without a chute and survived!

It was part of the rover which I landed on the Mun then lifted just the can off the rover back to the command module. I left them attached intending to dump the can as the lander used chutes to land at the KSC. I ended up bombing the launchpad with the can and its fuel tank, somehow the lander can survived... No Kerbals inside however as all 3 were in the capsule which landed a few hundred meters away.

What was beneath the can? I sometimes have all sorts of unusual stuff live through lithobraking, depending on just how much other junk cushioned the landing.

It's considerably more likely that the process of lithobreaking the rest of your craft, you slowed the CM down to a velocity below it's breaking speed.

EDIT: according to the config file, that breaking speed is anything over 8 m/s

One small fuel tank, thats it! I was pretty suprised when I saw it had survived its Kerbin encounter.

I seperated them at over 20km when I thought the path was heading for the sea and the chutes would land me at the KSC, I undershot a little! Here is the full craft on its way home.

I split it all up at about 20-30km
