Explode in the ocean

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm trying to land a new rocket on Eve.

I've found with parachutes, I can land on the ground at 5m/s. It's a bumpy landing but it holds up. If however, I land in the ocean, it explodes on impact. I tried to rocket assist and slowed down to 3m/s... still explodes. Why is the ocean far more dangerous than the ground?

What part explodes first? Some parts have small crash tolerance like mobile lab and if they hit water they get destroyed quite easily, while when you land on surface there are usually landing struts that absorb landing shock.

Water is more dangerous than land because on land, only parts which directly touch it are tested for their crash tolerance, the rest is what part joints can withstand. In water, each part which touches the water gets the crash tolerance test at its current speed multiplied by gravity (About 1.6 times on Eve compared to Kerbin).

It is possible to land to water on Eve, but you must be really careful.
