6730 dV stock Tylo Lander - Gravstar

Recommended Posts

Tweaked my Tylo lander. With two parachutes, this thing should be able to go anywhere:

Crew capacity: One brave soul.

Specs:

Stage 1 - 1264 dV TWR 0.94-1.36

Stage 2 - 1721 dV TWR 1.45-2.39

Stage 3 - 3744 dV TWR 1.02-3.02

Total: 6729

Total start mass: 39 t.

55km circular orbit to land then back with around 1200 dV remaining.

Craft file: Gravstar lander

(Complete stock, MechJeb removed from craft file).

6.7km/s is enough for Tylo? Because I know I'm playing it safe by packing 8km/s in two stages, but still that sounds light. And a tad inefficient, I get more delta-v with less stages and still mine only masses 15mT more.... In fact, the previous version was nuclear powered with also 8 km/s, and it massed just the same as yours. I scrapped it because the T/W was really scary (it got over one only after burning half the fuel, and it didn't end much over it). But I'll justify it with some role-playing no-nuke policy on landers. Here's how mine looks:

5800 is enough, barely. Nice tidy design you have. Tested mine and I can get back to orbit with 1000 dV still left.

Nukes generally don't have enough TWR for landings, without enough you just can't slow in time.

Aerospikes are a great choice.

I know how to embed, just been trying to stop multi page scroll lately.

So ridiculously over-engineered. Great! It will be my first Tylo landing, whenever it comes, so I'd rather play it safe and give me some hover time. It also works great that the upper stage can afterwards work in any other body without atmosphere as lander (up to Duna). But good to know if I want to design a reusable lander, it must be possible since I'm pretty sure I can get a single nuclear stage to 6km/s and T/W>1.1 without much issues, just a crapton of nukes. Piloting it to a landing would be something else, but Jeb will gladly accept the challenge, I'm sure. Even chemical stages should be able, barely, to do this single stage, but margins would be tight.

Your is very "by the book" on appearance, but it looks like a good choice if all you care about is functionality and simplicity.

The embedding thing is because that link makes you download, and people and anti virus program freak out.

Rune. Besides, you are fighting a lost battle. ;)

There are 2 my examples of one staged Tylo landers:

Lander "Tripod" with rover: ~5500 m/s dV, start TWR on Tylo - ~1.5; after Tylo landing TWR is ~3.3 and dV is 2600-2700 m/s. dV on Tylo orbit 30x30 km after ascent - 300-400 m/s.

Receipt success and fuel economy landing on Tylo is very simple: make periapsis as low as possible (6 km is perfect) and do not over speed descent: 20-30 m/s vertical speed is good enough.

This lander can land and return back to orbit from any bodies of Kerbol system, except Eve, include Kerbin :)

And minimalistic example of Tylo lander, designed for SSTO "Dedal", start TWR on Tylo - 1.02, dV - 5983 m/s; dV on Tylo orbit 30x30 km after ascent - 50-100 m/s:
