For the first time in I don't even know how long...

...I am *finally* watching the original theatrical release of The Empire Strikes Back!

That's it. No other point to this post. Just thought it was newsworthy!

My oldest son, Jimmy, is 6 1/2. He came home from the library a couple weeks back with an armload of Star Wars books. I reacted with alarm. My wife was all, "What's the big deal?" I said, "What's the big deal!? Are you kidding?! What if these books have spoilers in them!" While my wife rolled her eyes I carefully reviewed each book. While none of them contained The Big Spoiler, there were several that had major spoilers in them, so I segregated those. Then I went online and ordered a Blu-Ray player and the complete Star Wars on Blu-Ray (first Blu-Ray discs we've ever bought). We're going to start watching them together (in Machete order) this weekend. Yeah, I know that they're the Extra Special editions, not the original theatrical releases. (HAN SHOT FIRST!!!) I'll try to keep my teeth grinding down to a minimum.

Yeah, the blog post here explains it all. We just watched Empire Strikes Back together last night. Mind blown. I'm laughing because he's totally put out that he has to wait until next weekend to get answers. I had to wait THREE YEARS!!!

I read it, and I have to admit that it definitely makes a lot of sense ...

it even puts more sense/reasons into removing Episode 1 (aside from the obvious ones, which are the removal of an annoying character [young Anakin] and minimizing screentime of another one [Jar Jar Binks])

Several months ago, a buddy of mine moved out of town and left a good amount of stuff at his parents' house. After several weeks, his father became convinced that he was no longer interested in the stuff he left and began selling it off, piece-by-piece.

After the first round of the sale, I got a call. Apparently, there were a few things left and he wanted to know if I was willing to accept them for free. I shrugged and drove over, not expecting anything I'd ever want.

Boy was I wrong. First thing I saw? A set of pre-Special-Edition Star Wars VHS tapes. I squeed and he laughed, knowing full well how excited I'd get. Under the tapes? A TV-VHS combo, small enough to sit next to my desk. I squeed again.

The next day while I worked, I had the movies playing the whole time. I hadn't seen these versions of the movies since the Special Edition came out, which came out when I was 9. My girlfriend had NEVER seen the originals, so that was fun. Her face after watching the original song in Jabba's Palace was... well, priceless with a side of "wat."
