Lift Over Thrust (Best Glider Challenge)

Recommended Posts

that woud apear to be the case and it is devolving in to toy plains and infinity gliders

No infinigliders have been posted so far.

can't put numerobis in because he didn't show a picture of the cheat menu.

Oh, whatever. Someone else can claim it; I gave all the details to reproduce and improve.

I believe that makes 0.9 m/s: the second frame shows that I am not coming in at the top of a steep climb -- I'm still speeding up! But after that I lose thrust due to lack of solar panels. It's enough to stay at 70m, but not higher (maybe I should have added more panels).

Forgot to mention: this is all stock.

Realy 'No infinigliders have been posted so far.'

Then what do you call numerobis 0.9M/s entry as there is no outer turn i can think of outer than infiniglider

Infiniglide is not helpful in this challenge: this challenge is about gliding as slow as possible, which means maximizing lift. Infiniglide is converting lift into thrust. That means you have *reduced* lift. In order not to suffer from that, I turned off all the controls (yaw/pitch/roll) on the control surfaces.

What I'm doing is gliding. There's only thrust from the ion engine. When I turn off the ion engine, I land and stop (almost -- the runway is tilted down, so I gradually slow down to 0.1m/s or so, like all planes do). Basically I built the KSP equivalent of a feather, and put an engine on it.

So here is my entry, 2.8 M/S stock only. I used an LV-1 "Ant" engine to get me into the air and up to a dazzling 6 m/s before slowing down to this stable speed. I realise there are glitch machines that go slower but thought I would post anyway.

I tried using a rover wheel instead of the one landing gear but it got crushed by the wing weight. the solar panel is to power the probe core so it didn't die.

You should be able to go slower than that with your plane -- or use fewer wing parts. 2.8 m/s for 0.6t of payload requires just 46 wing connectors according to my script.

Do wings work when placed sideways, like those swept wings and some of the wing connectors are? I'm not 100% certain about how a wing determines which way is "up," but on my understanding, I suspect the lift on those is going mostly sideways, rather than up.

Sigh. Not worth trying to convince the unconvinceable.

Yea probably, this was just a hand built craft, I'm sure it could be improved.

I'm sure the sideways wings are not producing life, they are there as the lightest way to attach more wings. Maybe there is a better way but meh. Well actually I could have made it a tri wing... oh well.

I suppose glitch is a bad choice of words, I mean craft the in the real world would never work but in KSP game mechanics do work. 20 Flaps pointing down would never produce enough lift in the real world.

  • 1 month later...

here's my entry.

using FAR, and B9. and KW rocketry Struts

with 50% fuel on the tanks

DPs5IUs.png

note: i took it right exactly before it stalled somehow, it seems the limit it 16.6 ato 16.7m/s, and it could sustain a 2 sec 15.4m/s glide, but i just feel that was too forced.

with 75% fuels on the tanks

qr84PeW.png

another note, with 100% fuel, it could glide at 18-18.8m/s for about 12 hour is my guess, just about how long it took to burn enough fuel to make it have less than 50%.

since i have to give it a gas every now and then

and each of the struts weigh 1t each(it's the KWR heavy struts), so i could possibly lower my glide speed a bit more but im just too lazy

What happens if our glider refuses to stall? I've managed to get mine down to 5.4 m/s and it just won't stall!

EDIT: It seems to get down to about 5.2 m/s, at which point as soon as the prograde dips below the horizon, it accelerates by gravity and lifts back up again, but it seems to be at equilibrium at 5.4 m/s so this will have to be my entry I guess!

All stock, no mods, used two RCS thrusters to get it airborne, used them until empty then just glided around for some time!

Sorry if someone already rise this: the stock Aeris 3 (without FAR, I don't know what it is with it) win the challenge easily. It can glide more than a bird and when I fly with it, I completely turn the engine off a few kms from my landing spot. It may be because an issue with wings used and drag model.

The challenge isn't about how far the aircraft can glide though, its how slow they can go without stalling.

17.2m/s

Using: FAR, Pwings, LLL, and TV aerospace for the tiny engines (obviously, there are more that i use, but those are the relevant parts). Got as low as 15.2m/s just as my game crashed, with a vertical speed greater than zero. This is a manned submission which would make it just a touch heavier, therefore, faster than I think I can manage. I will submit an "unlimited" style version shortly, as unmanned and light as possible while still maintaining spirit-of-challenge legitimacy. My personal goal is sub 10m/s, we shall see how it turns out haha.
