Who is working on a Kraken Drive here?

One of our forumers at KSP has been working on an Kraken drive to send a ship to Eeloo in 11 hours.

Of course, being me, I didn't want to be outdone by this, and immediately ordered my Kerbals to work on an FTL drive capable of reaching 10c for an interstellar expedition.

Here is a quick log of my experiments:

Test Flight-1

Crew: Jebediah Kerman

Craft: X-18W

Outcome: Craft launched itself horizontally sideways into the VAB doors with an top speed of 50 m/s. Jebediah was hospitalized for severe injuies, and is not expected to go back on duty anytime soon.

Test Flight-2

Craft: X-18WA

Crew: Nedbob Kerman

Outcome: Craft reached Apogee of 20KM and travelled halfway across the ocean near KSC. Pilot recovered safely, claims "black magic engine" is "epic and awesome".

Test Flight-3

Craft: X-19W

Crew: Bill

Outcome: Craft fell apart on pad, but the opening of launch sequence propelled pod to 200M. Bill was safely recovered.

Conclusion: A Kraken Drive is certainly feasible, but needs much more work. However, I have doubts about its ability to send an manned vessel safely, due to high G-forces sustained by test pilots, and angry locals who claim KSC is possessing their spacecraft with magic. Further Work will be needed.

However, one question intrigues me. Who else is working on such a drive?

Shall we do a technology race?

It should be obvious by now that several ppl and companies are racing to be the first to post something practical. Good luck, and dont forget to share your discoveries.

I've been mucking about with it out of curiosity - I've no use for it as a thing, but I'd hoped to rendezvous one with my tour craft for a photo opportunity. I've had little practical success - while it's very powerful when it works, channelling the power into a useful direction has proved much harder, just trying to get a Mun intercept is a pain in the backside... and it has a nasty tendency to break when switched on, or switched off, or when it feels like it, or when getting close to planetary bodies... ^^

SSI K-Drive Series Lead reporting in!

We have one of the first (and smallest) K-Drive spacecraft up, the SSI Quark (Type 1 K-Drive Shuttlecraft). Check out the general catalog soon; it isn't posted yet, but Inigma stated he is busy and will update ASAP.

True. My 2m drives always break in 2 seconds, but somehow my 1m drives are reliable as hell. Just can't break them even if I try. Try getting a drive with LESS acceleration for precision maneuvers, put on a crapload of RCS, and get both RasterPropMonitor and KSI MFD for better control. They give you LCDs in the cockpit with flight info. I personally use them on K-Drive ships to check my orbit because you can't toggle the drive in map view. Don't worry, the craft is still stock-compatible.

My trials with the K-Drive have resulted in rather impressive debris fields, but not much else. Mostly my massive piles of reaction wheels (I use 'em as filler in my drive mechanisms) end up slung about at great rates of speed. My designs tend to not be very stable.

I've got the idea down, but my concept lacks refinement, usually giving one pulse and breaking down. I've not managed to figure out how to build a K-Drive that fires in a continuous pulse. With luck, I'll figure it out somehow.

EDIT: Seems I'm getting closer to a working prototype. Need to either get the power up or the weight down on my test craft to use it, though.

Since I discovered the concept of a Kraken Drive just a few hours ago, I've been trying to develop one with no success. Apparently using the "Start: Deployed" tweakable on the gear de-bugs the part that causes the K-Drive effect to work, and the solution is to "restart the game several times." Clearly I have not restarted enough for it to start working again.

I'm in that same boat, DisarmingBaton5. I can't seem to get them to produce near enough effective thrust to do much more than fart down the runway. When they work. Most of 'em I've made pulse once and jam, or push all my stacked material around rather than making thrust. Or of course, sending my ship flying across the map really fast... as a result of rapid unplanned disassembly.
