Project Mercury Mod-Help Needed!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I want to make a Project Mercury mod but I don't know how to texture at all and I haven't learned much coding yet. I think I can export into Unity, and I can model very well in Sketchup (it's the only modeling program I really know how to use). Therefore, I need a few more people to possibly help me model, texture, animate/code, and maybe export to Unity.

Thank you in advance, I think this could be a very succesful project.

Well I don't mean to discourage you, but Mercury, Gemini and soon Apollo ( pretty much the entirety of the early space program ) have been covered extensively by Frizzank's FASA mod. But again not to discourage you. I know for instance there's like three people working on Apollo so duplicate mods are certainly NOT frowned apon. The more the better.

Especialy if your learning.. now I'm not a modder myself, but I imagine Mercury is a good, simple project to start out with and learn the ropes. So by all means go for it. And hey if you can make an IVA for the Mercury pod you'd gain a follower here that much I know :P

Motokid, thank you for your support and for reminding me. I forgot to mention IVA's above, I need someone to work on those. The fact that Mercury is relatively simple, that is the exact reason why I chose it since this is my first mod.

Nathan, what where the alternate proposals?

Pictures didn't show up(I think).

I've been searching alternate Mercury setups, but I couldn't find nothing. maybe someone else knows more. Posting pictures? Well if you got them uploaded hit the "Insert Picture" at the top of this post box here. Put the url into that.

I recommend imgur for uploading images. Doesn't require an account/profile.

I was rather hoping you'd say that. :D

Regarding other Mercury(ish) proposals.

Here is the original Langley (Faget) Mercury design.

Here is the page for the USAF Project 7969 "Man-In-Space-Soonest" with the overview of all designs submitted and, further down the page, links to each.

You can see that both the original Langley Mercury design, and McDonnell's MISS submission, used the "headlight" reentry capsule reused on Apollo D-2 and on the Soyuz (though the Langley Mercury had a cap, and a fairing around the cap and down the sides).

For later-on Mercury might-have-beens, here's Grumman's submission to the final competition. You can see that Langley (and Faget) had clearly narrowed down the exact shape; there's little difference (other than the one-step rather than two-step cap, and the (?) drag brakes (?) at the top, between this and the McDonnell bid that was selected and became the real Mercury).
