Long range SSTO help!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I've been playing for a year and haven't really dabbled in SSTO's much. recently I tried a whole series of nuclear SSTO's but found out that in order to lift them, you need a massive plane :(. If you guys have any manageable-sized SSTO's, it would be amazing if you could post some pics! Also, if you are awesome and really feel that way, a craft file?

Thanks!

PS: I would like them to be actual SSTO's, because reasons of reusable space program.

This is my advanced three stage design:

The first stage are turbojets, second stage is LV-N + 2x 48-7S's for emergencies in case one LV-N is not enough and the third is nuclear only. I could've added a third turbojet but it works just fine this way.

Spaceplanes/ SSTO's are that one thing i keep strugling with! That's why I started building shuttles!

(Tiny bit of advertising) so if you are good at SpacePlanes and SSTO's and you're looking for a nice company, join PPP!!

Anyway, I too shall be following this post to get some help^^

craft file or design pics/details theend3r?

Landing it is really easy but getting getting it into LKO is not. I suggest clipping another turboengine through the LV/N as currently you need to use those 48-7S's to reliably achieve orbit (still lot of fuel remaining though, enough to get to mun, no problem there). This craft was designed to get to Laythe and is thus great in space, worse in atmosphere.

To hop around in Kerbin's SOI it's far better to use this craft:

Over 2300 m/s in atmosphere, easy to fly.

In both cases I HIGHLY recommend using Mechjeb to hold your direction.

EDIT: And I probably forgot removing it so if you don't have it then get it :) and in case you hate MJ I could probably reupload them.

Also, check the K-prize challenge. Most of the entries also put up links for you to download the sstos.

Here is a link to one of my sstos, a tiny vtol that can make space easily enough. Instructions for flight are included in the vehicle bay. It can make orbit like it is, or you can strap another tank on it's nose and go further.

Long range? I recently made just that. It goes to Laythe & Duna & back on one trip.

It consists of a whole 494 parts...but that's cause I wanted to carry a four-passenger module with me ;P

Be sure to avoid using buttons A and D while in atmospere. Certain death guaranteed. If you really wanna turn, roll the plane about 45~90 degrees degrees and pull up.

I could have made it more user friendly, but that would require even more parts! :o My calculator could't possibly handle that.

Oddly enough, I named my most recent SSTO : Long Ranged SSTO.

Powered by 4 Turbojets and 1 Nerva with plenty of airhogged intakes. It's using two tanks with T-joint, that seems to be giving it more lifts. It's meant to go interplanetary and drop a lander to grab science points and dock back to the spaceplane in orbit. I tested it going to Mun and Minmus and back with plenty of dV. I'm not really sure how to read the dV chart but it seems to have around 2600-2900 dV for the Nerva engine, which should be plenty to get you to Duna.

Once you get the hang of it, SSTO is fun to build but harder to make it pleasing to the eyes. Because you can make them so convoluted with intakes and wings that it looks like Meh.... Currently messing with my payload lander capsule to look better. If anyone has any tips.
