The Even Harder Interstellar challenge (HARD) (STOCK ONLY)

Mwahahahaha!!!! Good luck, sucker!!!

Goal: Preform a solar escape trajectory.....with limited tech.

DO IT ON CARREER 0.23.

You may use nuclear engines.

You may not use ion propulsion.

You may not use more than 1 stage to reach solar escape. (EDIT: You can use a lifter, but when it's time for the interstellar burn, no more then 1 stage!!!

You must use the fuel tank with black stripes, or smaller.

NO MODS.

You may not use RTB's.

No refueling.

You MUST reach solar escape.

Result: Recreate my first interstellar flight.

Scoring system is the first Scott Manley to preform this definitley do-able hardship.

And finally, the proof of do-ability: http://i.imgur.com/MtnrWi1.jpg

Could you upload a proof of concept? I'm not sure if this is possible with an SSTO (well, I'd be glad if somebody posted a proof doing the opposite). As far as I know, there are barely any SSTOs which can reach Eeloo (maybe there are, but they are rare as flying pigs).

Also... Giving points for selecting a predefined name for a craft? It's nonsense.

I'm sorry if I offended you, I didn't meant to. :)

RTBs? Do you mean no PB-NUKs? It's difficult to tell from your screenie if you're using them or not.

The rest of it doesn't sound terribly difficult - you can "escape" Kerbol with a craft that can make a Mün flight.

I'd say tweak the rules for scoring - entrants should post a parts list or their craft file along with screenies proving they've completed the challenge. Each part is given a score equal to the tier of the tech required to unlock it (with Starting Tech = 0). An entrant's score is the total point value of their craft; low score wins - that would award people who could perform the feat with a) fewer parts and B) lower technology levels. Point bonuses could be given to those who can do the whole shebang in a single stage (i.e. no separation events whatsoever between launch and Kerbol "escape").

Just a thought; if you want to do it by "who can get there first", that's fine.

This challenge really isn't hard: you just need to build a craft capable of reaching the mun, burn for a trajectory in which the mun gives you a gravity assist that puts you on an interplanetary trajectory, wait for your next encounter with kerbin an then finetune the encounter to give you a gravity assist that puts you on an interstellar trajectory. I will try doing it with only tech stage one though just to see if I'm capable of doing that.

I was going to ask why Kasuha's run was DQ'd...then I saw the Jumbo64...

No prob - just replace it with an FL-T800 center and six FL-T400s outboard and run fuel lines. Same amount of gas. The Skipper oughta still attach okay.

I'll try a crack at this my own self tonight. May attempt my earlier scoring suggestion just for lulz.

I wonder what you are trying to prove with your challenge.

It would probably help, though, if you at least used proper names for components that are allowed or forbidden, it's not that hard to find them in the game or on Wiki. There's quite a lot of tanks with stripes, the one I used has stripes, too. The two pipes along the jumbo tank are kind of stripes, too. And under "use striped tank or less" I understood it's the limit on amount of fuel to be used. So I selected the tank I thought you mean for the actual challenge ship.

Also pointing out what exactly have I done wrong is much preferred over "read the rules again". Your rules are not exactly clear.

Also I don't understand why are there any restrictions on the lifter if its only purpose is to get the matter of the challenge to orbit. Notice I was not even in orbit when I decoupled it.

I think I proved my point and I don't see a reason to rerun it using any different tanks. It's not going to change anything.

Not that challenging. Though didn't see anything that said anything but the terminal stage must be stock only, I did have to put a midrange radio antenna on because I've got remotetech installed.

Rockomax 48-7S, Communotron 5M for comms, eight 1x6 solar panels, eight tiny batteries, pancake okto probe body, standard SAS module.

The lifter stage is my standard 1.25m heavy w/SRBs (based on KWRocketry Griffon and Thor SRBs), which was jettisoned when I achieved LKO (80x80km). The escape burn was a midnight horizon burn which kept going until the fuel ran out (I thought I'd exceed radio range first, the engine burned that slowly...)

This challenge seems about as thought through as stumping one of your thoes on a sharp corner usually is.

Please read the challenge submission guide and redo the chelenge with some sort of scoring system and sensible rules.

I didn't need much luck... sucker... as a matter of fact, Jeb on his fresh career save has gotten out of a pod, gotten back in, and then sent to escape trajectory of the sun. Sorry Jeb.

This rocket was made 100% stock using only the starting tech and "basic rocketry" (that first one you unlock that costs 5 science).

Launch!

In orbit, ready to begin escape burn. You can see it has only one stage left.

Please have better manners and think about how to make the challenge better, for example, you could rank entries by tech level, fuel left, number of Kerbals, or any other thing you want. Something to encourage people to do more or do it with less. I don't want to be mean but I agree with most of the above posters.
