How much should parts weigh?

Is there any consensus on deciding the mass of parts? I know I can estimate with stock parts as a guide, but is there a better way?

You can always do mass calculations based on real life examples of materials. Take the area of a cylinder, multiply it by the weight of steel/aluminum (or whatever you are building your part out of), times how much of a percentage that material comprises that part, and you have a realistic estimation of your part.

Of course this does involve a lot of math...

Just make sense will be fine...

If your model is as accurate as CAD, you could do some calculation mentioned above, or guessing a number will not be more meaningless.
