Skylab Challange

Recommended Posts

Sky lab is a challenge were you have to launch a space station in a degrading orbit. You can have either you pe just under 70kms or both ap and pe. You get points on things like it total flight time and successful orbital rendezvous with it and other extras. Here are some rules for the challange.

1. No mods (when i say not mods, i mean NO MODS)

2. Planet must be kerbin

3. Beginning Periapsis must be above 60km

4. your station can not have any thrusters or rcs on it.

5. Your station must complete at least 1 orbit to count

Now here is how points will be given.

1.You will get 10 points for every 100 meters below 70kms you are at the start at your pe. (7000-pe alt/10)

2.You can have both ap and pe start bellow 70kms and both can get you points at starting altitude. (example 69900 ap and pe will get you 20 points)

3.You get 10 points with every successful docking with it like space plane or rocket.

4.You get 100 points if you can save it with a dock-able rocket booster (solid or liquid) and put it in a safe orbit above 70km pe and ap after it reaches a pe below 65km.

5.You get points for kerbals on the station from the start like this

1 Kerbal = 2 Points

5 Kerbals = 5 Points

10 Kerbals = 12 Points

20 Kerbals = 30 Points

50 Kerbals = 80 Points

For your station to count You must have pictures of the rocket at launch, 1 picture of it the f3 menu while it is in orbit (to show its highest altitude) and one picture of the station in orbit. If you dock a rocket to it and fly it to a higher orbit also have a picture of that also showing orbit before and after.

You also can no longer obtain scores for success docks or adding kerbals after saving the station.

Best Scores so far

1.

2.

3.

Did you forget to put this part in the scoring? How will that work if you rescue the station?

I have a feeling the docking scoring is exploitable: Launch your rescue booster, make sure it has lots of RCS fuel. Dock, then immediately undock. Repeat at 10 points per repetition until close to your burn point. Dock and stabilize orbit for 100 pts. Continue docking reps until you feel you've run up the score enough.

May be better to have the mission end once the periapsis is safely out of the atmosphere. And only count dockings of unique craft.

I did not really understand this challenge, but i tried to make a sumbit anyways.

So my thoughts of what the challenge was, was to make a station that could fall longest down into the atmosphere and still have an orbit when it is out of the athmosphere.

So here is my entry, a station capable of having 6 kerbals (not it was just jeb on it because i forgot to add more in the VAB) with an periapsis of 39.000 m, and still having a apoapsis of 300.000 m after that.

Almost at periapsis, things are starting to get really intense

Proof that i am able to finish this orbit.

It is true it will stay in a stable orbit when not loaded which i knew, eventually it will deorbit though because it will load every time you dock a space craft to it limiting its flight time. This is the reason i also didnt have a score for total flight time.

The point of the challenge is to build a space station that can maintain a stable orbit while also degrading because of the atmosphere, Then after that you can dock ships to gain points until it de-orbits since it starts slowing down from aerobreaking when the physics load when you dock it. So basically the best way to do this challange is to launch a rocket at a good pe maybe 68000m, then once below 65km you can continue until you feel that it is going to deorbit completely soon. Then you get your booster, dock it to the station and put it into a higher orbit to complete the max points for your final score.
