Fastest level-flight glider

Recommended Posts

So the aerodynamics system doesn\'t quite work realistically. We all know this, right? You can make a glider that glides forever. In fact, you can make a glider that accelerates upwards, generating free lift and thrust.

So here\'s the challenge: build a glider capable of eternal level flight (This is easy, just pile on a bunch of wings), and set it in a long-term level glide. Now the tricky bit: achieve the maximum 'cruising' speed you can. Take several pics with the altitude and speed either staying the same or going up slightly. ASAS will probably help with this.

Mod packs: C7, mostly. But you can use pretty much anything if you like short of config edits. C7\'s experimental pack is handy, as it has those decouple-able engines.

Here\'s my entry: 241m/s. Oddly, it goes a LOT faster when I hit the ASAS. The whole thing shakes with vibration, and it almost looks like it\'s 'flapping'. I\'m not sure how the aerodynamics system works, but it really does look like the ailerons themselves are propelling it forward. It even seems like I can do this by hand, to a lesser extent.

Also attaching the craft file. I think you just need C7, C7 experimental, and novapunch. The original (from the pics) used some other junk for the launcher, but I stripped it out.

That\'s common issue - the ASAS seems to change the deflection vector of wings so fast that they actually give you thrust of sorts.

Moreover there\'s a known issue with wings. These controlSurfaces have no aerodynamic compensation at all, and the force that drives them is very high. So having added enough wings you can propel a plane forward by just pressing <W> and <S> keys :D

Once I\'ve built a plane I just could not land. As I tried to pitch it up or down (or even steer!) it just gained an additional speed and climbed up.

The CTI responds to your challenge with our entry- The Diablo III, HM (Highly Maneuverable) variant, after firing all 9 missiles and depleting both railguns. Topped out at about 280 MPS. Actually got to 283, but couldn\'t screenshot fast enough. In fact... I just figured out I was going fast as a glider, and remembered this.

Anyone faster than 300 MPS?

Falcon-42AR goes 950m/s under 5km.

The OMG II

it has 24 C7 Exp. Canards. \'nuff said.

Edit: I\'ve experimented some more and I made a 96 Canard... thing and it accelerates so quickly that it explodes midair ROFL

Edit2: What about trying to exceed Kerbin\'s escape velocity? that\'d be awesome to say the least.

Magic turbines should not count.
