H-O-R-S-E Challenge Game: Rebirth

Recommended Posts

Challenge if accepted: Build a space station in orbit by docking sections from at least 4 separate launches:

1. A hab module which can house at least 8 Kerbals. It must be able to return and land safely on Kerbin under its own power in an emergency.

2. A science module including a mobile processing lab, science jr, mystery goo, thermometer, gravmax, antenna and power source.

3. A crew transfer and resupply vessel with space for at least 3 Kerbals and 4 tonnes of extra fuel (e.g. 360 liquid + 440 oxidizer).

4. Something else to give a purpose to your station. Go wild!

Ugh, that's a tedious challenge. This is like "go run around the block seven times, in a different pair of shoes each time, shooting a basket each time you change your shoes." I think you're missing the point of horse...

Obviously, I'm not a moderator for this challenge, but I was hoping to participate. This just isn't fun. I'll be back for the next round. (please make single challenges. Not 4-part mega-challenges that take up the entire afternoon. #3 would be a good example of a challenge.)

I was also looking to participate. I've enjoyed reading through this thread so far!

I too am not a moderator: The challenge is certainly possible - though as hawkwing stated it is tedious. Still, I believe you must also demonstrate your own success at the challenge first.

Bummer, man. I had all four modules in orbit. I accidentally separated a stage prematurely, tried to quick load, and it put me back before I had launched any of the vehicles. I've got the pics to show the four modules and their orbits, but I'm too discouraged to try again today. :(

EDIT: I tried again today. All four modules are docked. I just need to demonstrate that the Transfer Vehicle and Hab Module can safely decouple and land. https://i.imgur.com/TYREt8Q.png

Okay, I did it. I ran around the block 7 times and made those hoops!

Sorry for the number of images included. I recognize now that some of them are extraneous, but I wanted it to be clear that I completed each step.

Here's the new challenge:

Something went horribly wrong on a standard shuttle operation to transfer a Kerbal and a bunch of supplies to an orbital space station: An explosion while still in atmosphere crippled the shuttle - it's on a suborbital trajectory and any attempt at landing is out of the question. The pilot decides his (her) only choice is to jump out and EVA to the station, and he (she) only has enough oxygen for 6 hours in-game. The pilot is in radio contact with the Space Center, but tracking technology only provides Mission Control with periodic information about the pilot's velocity.

The station can be any craft with a pod and periapsis > 100 km. The shuttle can be any craft as well, but the pilot needs to start the EVA while the craft has altitude < 70 km and is on a sub-orbital trajectory. It matters not how the crafts get to these positions, Mechjeb, editing save files, etc. - whatever floats your boat. The EVA from the "defunct" "shuttle" to the "station" must be direct (no refuelling of mono-propellant), and must be completed inside of 6 (in-game) hours. Map view is certainly allowed, but in the spirit of the challenge, you can have no idea what your velocity is while you're thrusting in any direction, and only Kerbin, the Mun, and the stars can be used to infer direction.

Bonus points if the shuttle actually explodes as it should.

My shot:

EDIT: The original post said the station had to have periapsis < 100 km. That is incorrect; my apologies.

Hah, damn... I actually did something fairly similar the other day, but didn't take pictures...

I'd left one of my kerbals and some fuel on a station I was deorbiting. I was SUPPOSED to dock a space plane to it and transfer the crew / fuel for a Duna flight, but ended up doing that in the wrong order. This meant I had to DOCK IN ATMOSPHERE with an intercept at 42km, EVA the kerbal to the plane, and transfer fuel to the spaceplane so it would have enough to get back up into orbit. I'll be doing this challenge. I hope I can get my submission up in time to put the rest of you through the hell I mentioned above! =D

Edit: You guys are going to love the shuttle I'm flying Jeb up in today... :)

Completed mission in 2:15, then sent Jebadiah home on a service vessel docked to the station. I've been phasing out the older, smaller shuttles with larger 3-man designs. I'd meant to ram the fuel tank I'd dropped in the path of my SSTO, but forgot I was out of rocket fuel in the main tanks.... Oh well. With no way to re-dock to the floating tank, and being on a suborbital trajectory, the mission was as good as scrapped anyways!

Now then, a challenge for you all: You must dock to a vessel on on decaying, suborbital trajectory, remove one kerbal from that vessel (presumably a station) and then fly him to safety. The docking itself must be performed at an altitude below 50km, and the station must have a periapsis of at most 39 km.

Mr. hawking,

I have been trying the challenge myself and air resistance affecting the station and craft differently make docking a nightmare. Also, I'm not sure if kerbals have that kind of Delta V in their packs.

If you could revise it that would be great.

Challenge completed! The rules did not specify that it had to be multiple launches and there were no specifics for what the "station" had to be, so I interpret the rules to say that any two vessels docking counts.

I launch both vessels at the same time so that I can un-dock the top one and then re-dock them. That way they start out already aligned.

Re-docked! Notice Jeb's portrait is grey because it takes a couple seconds to load after docking to another vessel.

Kerbals recovered!

Here's my challenge.

Destroy Kerbin!

You must capture a Class E asteroid and cause it to crash into Kerbin. The asteroid may NOT be on a course that would impact Kerbin before your ship arrives at it. Pics of my attempt coming soon!

I just hit Kerbin with a 3.1 Kiloton E-type asteroid at 2.7 kilometer/s (water impact speed). It survived Re-entry and landed in the ocean intact, my Kerbals weren't so lucky.

Initially, the asteroid had a PE of 19900 km, meaning it wouldn't have even been closer than the Mun.

Craft I used to launch:

sfEtutC.png

Pushing the asteroid down by 40 m/s.

About now is when all the Kerbalsaurus are supposed to look up in confusion and then get simultaneously incinerated and thrown hundreds of meters back.

I feel tempted to be evil, like.... really evil... like asking you to recover my asteroid from 1160 meters below sea level and 700 Kilometers from KSC and put it on top of the VAB, but I won't be that evil because then I'd have to do it.

Hmm...

LES LAUNCHER

Go as far as possible using solely the new LES (launch escape system) for propulsion.

You may use parachutes, wings, and SAS, but no means of propulsion besides LES and decouplers (don't abuse the decouplers please).

The winner is whoever gets the furthest distance traveled (NOT ground distance covered, 3D-pythagorean distance counts as well). Any use whatsoever of control surfaces requires that FAR be installed to prevent infinigliders from sending kerbals to interplanetary space.

My attempt (FAR):

I got 12663 meters.

You must beat this. If your record stands for 24 hours, you win.

D= I think there was some confusion! I'd meant for you to fly him to safety in the craft you dock to the station, after transferring him from that station to the ship you just docked to said station. Not under his own EVA power! Safety was meant to be anything, really... landing on the ground, return to safe orbit, etc.

But you and jimbimbibble bring up a good point: I probably wasn't clear enough with my challenge rules. That said, jimbimbibble, I'd personally still define the two vessels you docked as being one vessel, but I don't really want to stall this thread again, so your submission stands. (If perhaps a bit dishonorably)

That was not as easy as I thought it would be. Nice challenge!

Unfortunately, I can't come up with any good challenges myself. The first person to conceive of an unconventional challenge and demonstrate their success at it can post here as my new challenge. (Is that legal? I think it has precedence in this thread - WoofMcMoose did something similar).

Ok, since there are no challenges and i just though of a nice one i will keep the ball rolling :)

While Jeb, Bob and Bill are stuck on top of the water tower Dunden is in control and wants to leave his mark. While checking (strip searching) Jeb's desk for the next mission he finds a folder named H.O.R.S.E. and decides to proceed with the mission in the most literal way possible. (Dunden does not do acronyms)

Challenge: Create a craft in the shape of a horse that stands on its on and reaches at least 10km altitude. No need to land, mystical animals only fly into heaven!

Proof that it is possible albeit somewhat ugly. All stock and I got to 15km :D
